No Apparent Reason
Documentary photographer John Angerson has worked around the globe for
the past decade on assignment for a variety of international publications. During
this time he has brought his unique perspective to a diverse array of subjects,
from the new South Africa to space exploration to the Jesus Army. At home
and abroad Angerson has turned his unfailing eye to one of the core elements
of our lives: the ordinary. In this latest collection of superbly crafted street images,
Angerson explores the often bizarre nature of our everyday world. John Angerson
has gained many prestigious awards for his work, including llford Photographer
of the Year. He is currently working as a freelance photographer with syndication
through Katz pictures, London.

Liverpool Poets
Liverpool's vibrant arts scene has flourished over the past ten years. The
emergence of the 'Mersey Poets' has played an essential role in exposing a
more diverse audience to British poetry. Mirza's intimate and beautiful portraits
capture the individual essense of each of these writers.
Folly w e l c o m e s this exhibition as a c o l l a b o r a t i o n with Litfest 2001

entire collection of portraits will be published as a book in the summer of 2002.

Heliotrope
Clive Gillman's interactive installation takes its title from the heliotrope flower a
plant indigenous to Europe and North Africa, named after its tendency to follow
the sun. Just as the heliotrope itself has its roots in ancient legend, Gillman's
lucid and beguiling installation strikes a similar mythopoeic chord, combining
iconic elemental imagery with a series of short but reverberant quotations from
the French/Algerian writer, Albert Camus. The whole piece explores the intimate
interplay between image and text, as well as the interplay between the natural
landscape, and our attempts to reflect it, and rationalise it in language.

Before Foot & Mouth
My family is a farming family and I wanted to record our way of life before it was
lost. Even before the outbreak of foot and mouth disease, farming was in
difficulty. In the wake of the BSE crisis of 1996, farmers' lives had become harder.
Some went bankrupt, some committed suicide, some could not afford to retire,
most had greatly reduced incomes.
The photographs in this exhibition were taken from December 2000 until
February 2001 when the Lancaster Auction Mart was closed due to the
outbreak of foot and mouth. One of the main sources of inspiration for this
work was Alastair Watson: the manager of the Auction Mart, who has
constantly striven to bring a sense of hope back to the farming community.

a two-course meal in the downstairs

Springing out of the
documentary tradition that
originated in Manchester in
the seventies, Peter Fraser
has always turned his
attention to what he sees as the
fundamentals of photography: time, light
and the paradox between appearance
and experience. His most recent series is
due to be published next year.

proving to be an exciting monthly
showcase of artistic ideas and inspiration.
Artists of any field take the opportunity to
present and discuss each others work
professionally, in an informal setting.

Folly is pleased to host a free monthly
screening of Early and Avant-Garde
cinema: from the edge of the frame of
our cinematic experience, made by
visionaries and pioneers. We hope that
they will generate lively discussion and
offer inspiration to anyone interested in
film.

Clare Strand looks at the
experiences of people
around her in oblique,
funny and often disturbing
ways. Frequently filled with
a sense of melancholy
carefully balanced with humour, Strand's
photographs interrogate a very British
world where a sense of longing for a
gentler past is constantly tainted with the
violence and banality of the present.
Strand has exhibited widely in the UK and
abroad.

readers and writers to celebrate the start of
Litfest 2001. Pick up your free copy of I Know
o Place: a full colour, limited edition book
featuring reading selections to suit your

with Zosia Wand and other readers. Find out
about readers groups in the area. A 'give it
a whirl' session for the curious and the
converted. Whatever your taste in fiction,
you'll be very welcome.
Make sure to visit the Rizwan Mirza exhibition
"Liverpool Poets" in the downstairs gallery
while at Folly.

Folly collaborates with Grunt, an artist-run
gallery in Vancouver, Canada to host a
new time-based art piece by local artist
Hester Reeve. She will create this unique
event live in the Folly Gallery with no
audience present. Using a web c a m and
the internet, the performance will be
simultaneously relayed across the globe
and projected onto a specially prepared
site at Grunt. The projected
performance - installation will be viewed
by an audience in Vancouver as part of
the LIVE performance biennial.

Following the Lancaster Digital Arts Festival
that took place in August/ September
2001 (seewww.folly.co.uk/ldaf) Folly is
continuing its aim to be at the centre for
new media development within the
Lancashire and North West region outside
of Manchester and Liverpool.
Our newest Unencoded project runs from
September to December of 2001. Folly
and North West Arts Board have
sponsored five artists to produce new
internet based art under the guidance of
mentor, Maria Stukoff. The five artists
include: Margaret Barber, Arlene Garrett,
Joshua Howe, Ehud Nir and Hester Reeve.

Contact
Contact is a local touring exhibition which
has been running for the past four years.
The project is designed to bring art into the
public sphere and to explore the potential
of its therapeutic benefits. St. John's
Hospice, Luneside Centre, Harvey House,
Inward House, Ridge Lee Occupational
Therapy Unit, Lower Priory Hall, Elm House
and Lancaster Castle Prison are all regular
participants in the scheme.

for Portfolio Gallery
Folly is currently in the process of
rearranging and renaming its downstairs
gallery space.
Rather than continue programming the
space as a one artist exhibition, we intend
to open the invitation to a number of
artists.
Artists will be represented by two of their
own frames in the downstairs space. Each
artist will provide Folly with a selection of
his/her work which we will rotate in the
frames over a six week period,
