October 4, 1993/298 A regular meeting of the Municipal Council of the Corporation of the City of Port Coquitlam was held in the Council Chambers, Port Coquitlam City Hall, 2580 Shaughnessy Street, Port Coquitlam, BC on Monday, October 4th, 1993, at 7:30 p.m. Mayor L.M. Traboulay and Councillors, M.D. Gates, M.J. Gordon, J.J. Keryluk, R.H. Talbot, M.A. Thompson, and M.R. Wright were in attendance. Also in attendance were Administrator B.R. Kirk, City Clerk S. Rauh, City Treasurer/Deputy Administrator J.G.S. Maitland, Director of Community Planning C.R. Felip, Director of Parks and Recreation K. J. Taylor, Recreation Manager/Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation L. Wheeler. CONFIRMATION OF MINUTES: uncijlor Keryluk con uncillor Gordon: That the minutes of the Regular Council Meeting held on September 27th, 1993 be taken as read and adopted. Carried. PROCLAMATIONS: Whereas one in three girls and one in six boys are abused by the age of 18 with the average age of sexually abused children being eight years of age; this abuse having been in all likelihood endured for several years; Whereas child molesters generally have five times as many victims as their convictions indicate; and in 75% of all cases do in fact re-offend; Whereas 99.9% of sex offenders lie, deny and rationalize their offenses and almost never seek treatment on their own; Whereas studies indicate that pedophiles often seek jobs, hobbies and volunteer activities that involve youngsters and excel at interacting with children, And whereas long term consequences of childhood victimization include higher rates of unemployment and low paying jobs, mental health problems, higher rates of suicide attempts and educational limitations, Now therefore I, Leonard M. Traboulay, Mayor of the Corporation of The City of Port Coquitlam, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM the week of October 11th to October 17th, 1993 as "CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE PREVENTION WEEK" in the City of Port Coquitlam.
