3 Pa Se td tata A ala NTE et LEE TO: Mayor and Council DATE: March 29, 1973 Une it APR. 2 1973 FROM: L.D. Pollock, City Administrator. 1. Conferences Information is attached on two conferences coming up during the month of May. The first is the Municipal Officer's Conference which will be held in Nelson on May 29 to 31st. Ron Freeman, the City Treasurer and I have generally attended this conference in the past and I would request that Council approve our attendance this year. The second is the Building Inspector’s Conference which will be held in Victoria this year, May 9th, 10th and llth. Nick Chernoff the Chief Building Inspector is an executive member of this Association and has in the past been attending these conferences. I would request that Council approve his attendance and that expenses be paid. 2. Anti Theft Protection Program Staff Sergeant Williams has forwarded me some information on an anti theft program which involves engraving identification on household and personal articles as a deterrent to theft. This program has apparently been undertaken in several Lower Mainland communities and has been initiated by the R.C.M.P. In addition to marking the articles for identification,a list of such property, together with the nature of identification, is placed in safekeeping and the owner's premises is marked with a decal so that it is obvious from outside that theft protection has been undertaken. The R.C.M.P. have discussed this program with the District of Coquitlam and the Council has given their support. The City's involvement would be to set aside some funds for the printing of pamphlets and advertising (perhaps a letter circulated with a tax notice or in our newsletter) and the purchase of decals. Staff involvement would be minimal and I understand that the R.C.M.P. would take part in distributing the material to apartment buildings to discuss the program with the owners. The R.C.M.P. have engraving tools available 1.0/2
