ous banquet was served by the mem-
bers. Mr. Vance of Prince Rupert was
master of ceremonies and following his
introductory remarks and a few good
stories he called on E, T. Kenney for
a speech, Then S. N. Kirkaldy head-
ed a procession of members, Sam play-
ing his coronet, and Bro. John Heb-
burn was the object of attack. Tt was
the 21st anniversary of his initiation
into the order and the members pre-
sented him with a birthday cake, Bro,
Hepburn made a speech of apprecia-
tion and told a number of stories and
then dancing was resumed until three
int, concluding with “Auld Lang Syne

Montrenl—-Not since before the war
has Canada experienced such a land-
Ward movement from the urban, com-
munities as thut which has taken place
during the past year, according to.a
report recently issued by Dr. W. J.
Black, director of colonization for the
Canadian National Railways, This
report shows that the department ar-
colonization assisted 3,402 faniilies
during the past year in finding new
farm homes adjacent to the C. N. R,
Hnes and involving 468,812 acres, This
department Lis alse co-operated in the
settlement of 1,413 unemployed fami-
lies under the Relief Settlement Pilon,
financed by the Dominion, provineial

guverninents and by the citles,

Commenting on this ‘movement Dr,
Black says that ‘the demand for farm
Jauds bas not leen ‘eqnalled for many
years, and is due to the movement uf
unemployed families from urban cen-
tres who, through force of econonic
circumstances, haye found it necessary
to revert to their former occupation of
farming. The post war requirement»
caused an abnormal increase in indus.
trial development and the high wages
induced many families and single men
to leave the farms for the cities.
These people now find themselves in
the ranks of the unemployed, and with
what capital they have left are anxious
to re-establish themselves where they
will be self sustaining and sure of at
least a living. Those who are poing
back, many of. them to their old home
communities, are securing lend for less
money than they could have secured
the same properties at any time in the
last twenty years.

The vast majority of the ,Back-to-
the-landers are returning to rural (is-
tricts with a determination to stick.
in spite of the difficulties facing them,
They realize that in spite of low pric.
es they will be able to provide food and
shelter. The head of one of these
families who had decided to return to
& home-stead and develop a new home
for his family, when informed of the
difficulties facing him, remarked, “T
know it is going to he tough, but it is
tougher in the elty.” Having experi-
