Youth Now Lack
Gainful Employment

TORONTO, Ont. — More
than 400,000 employable youns
people in Canada between the
ages of 15 and 30 are without
gainful employment, the Re-
search Bureau of the Canadian
Youth Congress revealed this
week after an exhausitve sur-
vey. This is approximately 15 per-
eent of the total number of youne

Canton’s Fall Brings New Phase
in China’s War For Liberation

cation was given results of nego-
tiations concluded November 18 be-
tween representatives of District
18, United Mine Workers of Amer-
ica, and Canadian Collieries (Duns-
muir) Ltd. by miners from the
Beban Mine, Extension, and Cham-
bers Mine, South Forks, at their
meeting Saturday.

The new agreement gives a gen-
eral wage increase of seven percent
and will not expire before 1940 al-
though both signatories to the
agreement may enter into confer-—
ence for revisions. A

CALGARY, Alta, Dec. 15—Miners
in Alberta and Eastern British Co-
lumbia coal fields will benefit from
an agreement drafted between re-
presentatives of District 18, United
Mine Workers of America, and the
Western Canada Bituminous Coal
Cperators’ Ass'n Which grants
them wage increases of seven to
ten percent.

Day Miners receiving more than
$5 per day will receive a seven per-
cent boost while miners earning
$5 and less will benefit by the ten
percent wage increase.

Marks Record Year

Ranks of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada may be

strengthened by the addition of 1300 organized gillnetters and —

frollers as a result of the decision to affiliate made by the four-
day annual convention of the Pacific Coast Fishermen’s Union,
BC Section, held last weekend in Vancouver.

As a first step, delegates decided to apply immediately for
disaffiliation from headquarters of the PCFU at Astoria, Ore-.
gon. The PCHU was formerly chartered by the now defunct.
International Seamen’s Union, and is one of the unions which.

achievement in maintaining prices
and building organization,’ Dan
Martin, retiring president, told del-
esates in presenting the report of
the executive.

Qutlning the number of strug-
gles engaged in by the union,
Martin pointed to the fact that in
every instance during i938, the
membership had gained the m:-
jority of their demands on prices,
had succeeded in forcings estab—
lishment of an arbitration board
during the summer which ruled
in favor of paying 1937 sockeye
prices, had prevented drastic
price cuts on the Fraser River
during fall fishing, and had given
real assistance to the seiners in
