ver auditorium, April 21; national
gymnastic championships, Van-
eouver auditorium, April 22; an-
nual weightlifting championships,

April 25.

This increase is considered all
the more notable in view of the
extended period of inactivity over
the recent holiday period.

The total, Director Eisenhardt
explained, includes the summer
membership for 1938, but does not
account for the 2082 Junior mem-
bers who also come under the sup-
ervision of the Pro-Rec gymnastic
instructors and whose inclusion
would boost the present Centers’
“family” to 26,663—‘‘young adults
of all ages.”

Staged By Little Theatre

Resuming its trend of plays dealing with themes of social

significance,

the Vancouver Little Theatre Association will

present Robert Sherwood’s “Idiot’s Delight” at its playhouse
en Commercial Drive for three days next week beginning

February 8.

This play, which won the Pulit-
zer Prize, is both exciting and
amusing, has provoked controyv-
ersy wherever it has been present-
ed and has just closed in London
after a run of two years.

In “Idiots Delight” Sherwood
raises his voice against the sense-
lessness, brutality and futility of
war, and particularly against the
provocativeness of fascist policy. It
is not 2a propaganda play in the or-
dinary sense, however, for what
ever persuasion the author exerts
on the audience is achieved
through skilful manipulation of

Something of the intensity of the
days just preceding Munich is felt
throughout the play, which in its
analysis is just as timely as if it
had been written last week.

ing the crisis in Great Britain last
fall the British censors forced
withdrawal of the play, the the-
ater remaining dark until Cham-
berlain returned from Munich.

Paps and the Spanish republican
government. The last dance for
the Mac-Paps realized $5.42, which

Silano High School, near Forty-—

With Hastings Forum and the
proposed rinks providing winter
recreational centres, Commissioner
MacDonald believes it would be an
incentive for junior hockey leagues
to operate.

Converting of Prospect Point,
former signal station, into a beauty
spot and lookout place with the
possibility of having a tearoom es-
tablished there as revenue-pro-
ducer, were taken inte considera-
tion by the board.

Preservation and improvement
of the trees in Stanley Park will
be undertaken as a permanent
policy at a cost of $5000, which the
board deems sufficient to carry on
the work each year. Appointment
of a forestry expert and tree
surgeon to aid in the work is being
considered.

Windermere Community Associa-
tion and Windermere Ratepayers’
Association representatives, to-
gether with Harold Winch, MLA,
and H. Gargrave for the CCE ap-
peared at the meeting demanding
that the board lift its ban on po-

litical meetings in Windermere
Community hall, which it admin-
isters.

The matter was tabled after

a lengthy discussion until the next
meeting and in the meantime some
efforts will be made at a concilia-
tion between the board “and the
Windermere organizations.

JOBLESS WANT
RELIEF RIGHTS

NWANIMO, BC, Feb. 2.—Relief of-
fiicals are making a rigid check-up
on all the activities of the men in
the labor movement ever since the
picket line on the scrap iron com-
menced. Warnings have been is-
sued that any “‘slackness” in at
tending to work will be rigidly
dealt with.

Unemployed here have never
ben forced to work in the snow or
rain, but now this rule is being
‘seriously threatened. The NDWU
obtained this concession from the
public works department in 1937
with the agreement that men trans—
ported to and from work would be
provided with covers for the trucks.

This latter rule has been adhered
to generally but on exception is be-
ing made by the road foreman in
the Worthfield area. After com-
plaints were made by the organiza-
tion, Mr. Bigwood, road engineer,
replied that the matter would be
attended to satisfactorily.

Wow the relief administrator has
seen fit to abrogate this by stating
that men who refused to ride in the
open trucks would be docked for
the days they do not comply. Con-
ditions are left to the road foreman
to make.

The NDWU is beginning to func-
tion again and will strive for the
conditions it won through struggle
previously.
