pices of the Friends of the Soviet

ber 31, he found the people ef Cuba
in full agreement.

To the criticisms voiced by for-

Hoy, popular Cuban newspaper,
answered editorially on Nov. 2 (be-

Panama Alarmed
For Neutrality

Jeaflet is being circulated througa-
cut this country protesting against
the assertion by Senator Borah
that from the point of view of na-
tional defense of North America,
Panama is a part of the United
States.

“Panama does not belong to the
United States. Not even in time of
war,’ says the leaflet.

“America is a neutral continent,
but neutrality does not mean viola-
tion of our laws and constitution,
neither by the belligerent countries
nor by any neutral state,’ it con-
tinues. “The European war is not
the best excuse to hide the plun-
der interests of Yankee imperial-
ism in the small countries of Am-
erica, and in the Huropean colonies
in America.

“The Panamanian people will co-
operate with all men and with all
countries of this continent to de-
fend human liberties. But the
peoples of America will not coop-
erate with the United States in
erder to lose the few liberties we
still enjoy.”

For Soldiers’ Families

LONDON, Eng.—(Passed by British Censor) .—The ‘Shilling
to Keep a Child’ allowance paid by the government to soldiers’
families was slightly increased last week as a result of indigna-
tion throughout the country. A soldiers’ wife and four children
will now have 39 shillings weekly to keep herself and the family

instead of 35 shillings.

How the government expects
such a family to live with an aver-
age of 10 shillings per head no one
Enows. The wife gets 24 shillings
for herself, 5 shillings for the first
child, 4 shillings for the second
ehild, 3 shillings for the third child
and 3 shillings for every other
ehild.

The previous grant was the same
as it is now for the wife and first
ehild, but 3 shillings went for the
second child, 2 shillings for the
third, and one shilling for all other
children.

The increases don’t even meet
the rise in the cost of living.
This mean sum was only given

after a storm was raised all over
the country and all parties had
protested in the House of Com-

mons nearly a2 month ago. And
even this is not contributed en-
tirely by the government.

Every soldier is compelled to
send 7 shillings to his wife and
family. The soldier is today paid
i4 shillings weekly, compared with
10 shillings and sixpence in 1914
But instead of compelling him to
make an allotment of three shill-
ings and sixpence to his family as
in the last war, the government
now makes him send 7 shillings
weekly.

In 1914 a wife and four chil-
dren were allowed 34 shillings and
sixpence. Today but for the sol-
dier’s extra allowance, the sum
would be only 33 shillings and six-

pence—and prices are incompar-
ably higher.

Costigan On Peace

SEATTLE, Wash—America

peace last week by Mayor J. Lyle Telford of Vancouver, who
raised his voice against the ‘economic insanity of war’ and
urged America to stay out of the war.

"We are not sure yet what we

“There’s a lot of excitement and
some people think they know why
there is a war, but nobody has yet
told what it’s all about.”

slaughter men who are as innocent
as you and I,” he declared, in urg-
ing America to stay out of war-

“You, in this country, can make
no finer contribution to the civil-
ized world than by keeping your
democratic processes working and
continuing your efforts to improve
the standards and social] conditions
of your Citizens,” Telford said.

Blame for the flames of war now
sweeping Europe was tossed on
the doorstep of British financial
interests when the outspoken may-
or recalled who financed Hitler.

“Britain financed Germany,’ Tel-
ford said. “It loaned them a lot of
money. Canada sent millions of
pounds of nickel to Germany and
now the darn stuff is coming back
a lot faster than it went oyer—in
arms and bullets designed to kill
those who sent it over.

“British money built German
factories and institutions. Now
war is declared, so we must go
over and blow them to smithereens.
Then when the war is over our
taxpayers will be asked for more
loans to build up the factories and

institutions we have just blown
up.”

retary of Washington Common-
wealth Federation, declared that
America must mobilize for peace
with greater dispatch than it has
ever mobilized for war, Costigan
called for immediate steps to halt
the drift toward war.

industry, rigid control of war prof-
its and a militant championship of
Civil rights for all were vital if
peace is to be preserved.

‘We must fight any attempt to
destroy civil liberties. he mo-
ment anyone is placed in a con-
centration camp, regardless of

the liberties of every single per-
son is in jeopardy,” he said.

In calling for unwavering protec-
tion of civil rights, Costigan said

Warning that America must
wipe out poverty before poverty
wipes out America, Costigan de-
nounced the Congressmen who
fight expenditures for human
needs in peace time but pour liber-
al funds into the destructive chan-
nels of war.

Costigan declared the WCE
would support only those candi-
dates who stand ‘four square and
ready to take economic steps ne-
cessary in the way of social change
to keep America out of war.”

Labor Wins
In Detroit

WASHINGTON, DC.—Outstand-
ing in the recent US off-year elec-
tion returns was the smashing la-
bor victory in Detroit, important
gains in Ohio, scattered successes
in New Jersey, Connecticut and
Pennsylvania, and general in-
ereases in labor’s vote in all local
contests.

The landslide defeat of reaction-
ary Mayor Richard Reading, of
Detroit, indicates that the big auto
city has definitely broken the
strangle-hold of the corporations
on the city’s political life. Edward
J. Jeffries, Jr., backed by labor,
polled 226,185 to Reading's 108,975.

In a frantic effort to save him-
self from defeat after he ran far
behind in the primary, Reading
indulged in a vicious labor-baiting
campaign. He made the CiO an
election issue and the outcome was
hailed by the nation’s press as a
major CIO victory-

Six councilmanie candidates
supported by ClO and Labor's
Won-Partisan League forces were
also successful in the progresive
Sweep. Two anti-labor council in-
cumbents went down to defeat
with Reading.

A major issue in the Detroit
race was removal of Police Com-
missioner Pickert whom the CIO
has charged repeatedly with illegal
assaults on workers and other an-
tilabor activity. Jeffries pledged
to fire Pickert and since election
has said he intends to do it

promptly.

mentary evidence of question-
able financial manipulations in-
volving several millions of dol-
lars collected from the public
by Rev. Charles E. Coughlin,
radio priest of Royal Oak,
Michigan, was placed in the
hands of US federal authorities
last week by the editors of New
Masses, US national weekly
publication recently banned in
Canada by. federal authorities.
Joseph Worth, editor-in-chief of
New Masses, who turned over the
evidence the magazine is publish-
ing in a current series of articles,
Geclared that the evidence war-
ranted continued investigation anid
legal action by the US attorney-
fZeneral’s office, postoffice authori-
ties, and the Bureau of Internal
Revenue.

Said INorth:

“From the evidence which we
have placed in the hands of feder-
al authorities, there seems to be
reason to believe that Charles EB.
Coughlin has used the mails to re-
ceive money under false pretenses
and has issued fraudulent state-
ments to US postal officials with
reference to the ownership of 5S0-
cial Justice magazine.

“There also appear to be discrep-
ancies in the annual financial re-
ports made by Social Justice Pub-
lishing Company, Inc., to the Mich-
igan State Corporations and Se-
eurities Commission and to the
Bureau of Internal Revenue whicao
we feel should be brought to the
attention of federal authorities.”
SPIVAK INVESTIGATED.

New Masses announced that the
documentary evidence will be pub-
lished in a series of six articles.
The evidence was gathered by
John L. Spivak, author of the
series, who was assigned four
months ago to investigate the fin-
ancial set-up of Father Coughlin’s
Various corpdérations, which in-
clude Social Justice Publishing Co.
Inc., the Radio League of the Lit
tle Flower, Inc., the National Un-
ion for Social Justice, Imc., and the
Social Justice Poor Society, Inc.

In the first article New Masses
magazine published documents
which purport to show that tax-
exempt church money collected by
the Radio League of the Little
Flower upon the signed assurances
of Father Coughlin that it was not
a ‘political organization’ were used
to build a political organization or-
ganized by the radio priest.

Details of the corporations or-
ganized by Father Coughlin and
charges that the priest violated
Canon law of the Roman Catholic
Church were also made.

Spivak won a nation-wide repu-
tation as a result of his author-
ship of books exposing anti-Semit-
ism, Nazi and fascist espionage.

ily Williams, famous Soviet agron-
omist, died here last week, in his
76th year.

Academician Williams was pro-
fessor of agronomy at the Agricul-
tural Academy, deputy to the Su-

stituents here that many of
the government supporters
were “so foolish to to wish”

dealt a great blow to Adolph
Hitler’s strength, Cripps de-
clared, “and if we are not
fools, we should realize that

friendly as possible with the
USSR, which has become

Catholics
Opposed

NEW YORK, NY. .— Tens of

thousands of students in the Cath-
clic colleges of the United States
are opposed to American partici-
pation in the European war, in the
tremendous proportion of more
than 40 to 1. This is the result of
a poll conducted by the Catholic
weekly, America, detailed results
ef which were given in the cur-
rent issue.

The magazine confines itself to
only one comment on the results,
leaving “the analysis Open to com-—
mentators,” but its remark is sig-
nificant: “The collegians are
against war and most of them
choose not to fight.”

Most important of five questions
placed before students at all but
two of the Catholic colleges in the
country was the first, “Do you,
personally, favor the entry of the
United States, as an armed force,
into the present European war?”

‘No’ replies were received from
44,072 students; "yes" repiies from
only 1,125 and ‘doubtful’ from 481.
This proportion, 40 to i, held ap-
proximately .true from colleges of
various types and in different
parts of the country, showing that
opposition to. American involve-
ment in- the war transcends both
sectional and other boundaries.

Students at Catholic colleges
fer men gave 20,855 ‘no’ replies.
567 ‘yes’ replies, 222 ‘doubtful’ and
1,206 ‘not voting’. At colleges for
women the poll gave 14,286 ‘no,’ 231
‘yes’, 180 ‘doubtful’ and 973 ‘not
votine.” At eraduate and profes-
sional schools, there were 8,931 ‘no’
votes, 327 ‘yes’, 129 ‘doubtful’ and
212 ‘not voting.’

The third question took up the
main danger of involvement of the
US in the war, on the side of the
Allies, It asked: “Would American
intervention in the European war
Gn the side of Great Britain and
France lead to the creation of a
stable peace in Europe?”

Here the proportion of ‘no’ votes
Was more than 10 times the ‘yes’
votes, showing still a decisive be-
lief that American participation
in the conflict would not bring
good. There were 36,102 ‘no’ votes,
3,047 ‘yes’ votes and 6,364 ‘doubtful’
