Prince short by the death of the King --- WITH IRENE NEW WESTMINSTER — When I started this holiday the days stretch- ed in front of me, an endless proces- sion of hours; plenty of time to do all the things I planned. The firgt couple of days were dawdled away in getting settled, in talking myself dry of my news and listening with eager ears to all the locai gossip. Then began a procession of rela- tives to see the latest arrival to the Tanks — Blaine — and so a few more crowded days went by. Then one evening I finally broke into a giddy whirl of excitement by going to a show. With five or six theatres close by to choos? from, the two features, newsreel, comedy AND bang night that we picked were mis- erable “D” productions and my first hig night failed to live up to expec- tations. A night or two later, I went howl- ing and although I enjoyed it, the enthusiasm of competitive playing was missing; and again I felt rather let-down. Now a week had gone by. but still there seemed lots of time. Another week was spent in visiting and being sited, and I couldn't even find tims shop! Finally it dawned on me y holiday was almost over, and I had only been to Vancouver once, on busines: 0 night clubs, no shopping sprees, no parties. I suppose many looked-for holi- days turn out just the same. They are enjoyable, but not the exciting round of days and nights that you had envisioned. I used to say that there was one thing about shopping in New West- minster — there were only so many stores to shop for a dress, for in- stance, and you could cover them in an afternoon and know exactly wha you would get and at what price. Whereas it would take days to cov the dress shops in Vancouver: you could buy a garment only to see Another distinguished product of The BRITISH COLUMBIA “2, DISTILLERY 4 Co. But New Westminster has joined the ranks of the larger cities, and 1 found myself over-awed by the mul titude of articles for sale, and the number of places to shop. IT wandered soggily around on my web feet — I mean, plastic-covered feet — through the rain trailing through the bright mirrored stores until I felt saturated with the pro- fusion, and came home with only a few minor purchases, ture has something to do -with my dissatisfaction over big-city shop- ping. I love to find a bargain. I do not like jamming inio a store with hundreds of other women and bawing over goods at a mammoth sale, but if I can wander around and tind something I want marked down to half price, I go around in a glow for days. But with so many stores to: visit, there is always the possi- the next one — and with so many “Gigantic Sales” and “Drastic Clear- you begin to wonder just what is a bargain and what isn't. Guess I should be more like Clive. Although Scottish by birth, money seldom worries him and he goes out and buys what he needs at a store he likes without questioning the price, Guess I’m the world’s most care- less and luckiest traveller. The day after I arrived my brother brought my wallet and travellers’ cheques over to me. I had dropped them in the back seat of his ear, and had not even discovered my loss twenty-four hours later. Two weeks later when I began to think of returning home, it occured to me to check on my return Plane ticket. It was missing! Yes, it was in the back of my brother's car too, and could have been picked up and cashed in by dozens of people, 0 Se Father B.
