Hlsewhere in- the district, with
the exception of 100 Mile, the school
term has got underway according to

dents at home and the building is

Although the new wing of Forest
Grove school has not materialized,
it is expected the teachers will be
able to manage with the decreased
enrollment there. The school board
was unable to get tenders for the
wing and is considering a new plan
of a pre-fab unit.

The new school at Riske Creek is
still on planning paper. Originally to
be built by H. R. MacMillan Com-
-pany as a special pre-fab unit, the
order was dropped when lumber
strikes crippled factory production.

WEED KILLER SPRAY
USED AS TEST FOR
LAND CLEARING

District ranchers will be watching
with interest the results of a test re-
cently carried out on the 150 Mile
ranch of Huston Dunaway to deter-
mine the feasibility of plant killing
spray as an aid to clearing willow-
infested bottom land.

Man behind the test is Distriet As-
riculturist Joe Walsh, who bat
long felt that present methods of
clearing this type of growth were too
costly. Government funds are not
available for the work so Mr. Walsh
had to interest the ranchers them-
selves in the scheme.

It has been proven by previous
tests that 2-4D kills willows, and
this experiment will further
the value of certain combinations of
weedicides in controlling and killing
alder, poplar and similar types of de-
ciduous trees.

For the experimental plot of 50
acres at the 150 Mile, a mixture of
2-4D and diesel oil was sprayed from
a low-fiying aircraft from Art Sellars
Langley Prairie’ firm.

This is the first stage of a three-
year plan. Next year the land will be
dragged with heavy ‘U’ chains and
burned over and the third year

Cost of the spraying is about $4.50
and by the time the land is dragged

that this cost will rise to somewhere

Record Wheat Yield
From District Farm

What is probably a record wheat

yield for the Cariboo is reported by
Reg Miller, manager of Les Gil-

Richmond Farms at Soda

Reg states that a picked acre in a
9.8-acre plot of Marquis Wheat yield-
bushels. Average for the total
plot was 75 bushels.

Reason for the heavy yield is at-
tributed ‘to stwo causes: the condi-
tion of the soil and a perfect growing
son. The wheat was sown on land
that was used to produce potatoes
last year and was heavily fertilized.

A field. of oats on the farm is ex.
pected to go better than 100 bushels
to the acre.

Quesnel Forks
Resident Passes

Funeral services were conducted
from the hospital Chapel Tuesday
afternoon, for Frederick Jacobie
long-time resident of Quesnel Forks,
who passed away in War Memorial
Hospital September 6. He was about
71 years of age.

Born in the United States, Mr.
Jacobie lived in Calgary for a number
of years before coming to Quesnel
Forks in 1918. While on the prairies
he lost a foot while working as a
brakeman on the CPR.

When he first came to Quesne?
Forks he was engaged in mining at
Seven Mile Creek. In late years he
has been employed by the public
works department.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs.
E. Corey, in Toronto. His wife pre-
deceased him about three years ago.

Residents Start Work

On Bella Coola Road

Bella Coola residents are not wait-

ing for the government to start work

on -constructing a road from their
valley to the Chileotin.
According to Isaac Sing, Anabim

road from the Anahim Lake end.

figures that are published annually
by. the 33 Canadian Railway com-|
panies, Mr. Kennedy said that last
year the PGH's ratio of operating
expenses to earnings was 94.90 to
100. In ordinary language this means

of $94.90 for every. $100 earned. The
same year the C/N.R.'s ratio was 91
to 100. The 1950 figure for the PGE}
was' 121.00 to 100.

Reasons behind.this favourable re-
port are the dieselization of the line,
increased yolume, and the attitude
ofthe men who operate British Col-
umbia’s public owned railroad, Mr.
Kennedy stated. -

Referring back to the lines’ ‘joke
book’ stage; the speaker said this was
the worst handicap the PGE had to
overcome.

“You stand a chance to rebuila a
business that is looked on as a tra-
gedy,” he'stated, “but. you can’t do
much with a comedy.”

But, there is far less of this sneer-
ing laughter hea-d in other parts of,
the province today, Mr. Kennedy tuid
his audience. More people are heconi- |
ing interested in the rajlroad and
interested in its success.

SELLING JOB

Those of us along the line have
still a big selling job to do, Mr. Ken-
nedy asserted. Long a lone voice in
hammering at the government to. ex-
tend the PGE into Vancouver, the
general manager said it is more im-
portant than ever that this be accom-
plished.

stripped the line’s facilities. This is
particularly true of the bottleneck at
Squamish where the company is hir-
ing extra barges to try and keep
traffic moving at a cost of $450 a day
per barge, With barges handling 12
cars at a time the move from Squa-
mish is costing $23.60 a load by
water when the same load could be
moved for $4.82 if the extension was
a reality.

Speaking on the recent allega-
tions by Cariboo lumber operators
that the new freight rate structure
would cut them out from the Eastern
market, Mr. Kennedy said there wes
not much the PGE could do about
the rate structure throughout Can-
ada, which was set by the Board of
“Pransport. ‘The PGE doesn’t go to
the prairies,” he stated.

There has been a saving over for-
mer shipping rates however, and Mr.
Kennedy” pointed out that a close
examination of all aspects of the case
would show the PGE had affected a
fair deal for Cariboo shippers in ne-
gotiation with the large railroads.

ACCIDENT VICTIM
DIES IN HOSPITAL

Death claimed a young Fraser
Valley woman in War Memorial-Hos-
ital Friday as a result of multiple
injuries she received in a iréak ac-
cident on Deep Creek hill August 20.

The victim, Miss Lillian Ca
of Aldergrove, received her injurics
when she was thrown out-of the cab
of the runaway truck.

Accordng to police reports, the
truck, driven by Frank Gale of Ques-
nel, was travelling north down the
ill when the brakes failed. Attemt-
ing to stop his vehicle, Gale turned
the truck into the bank three tim

The accident victim and the three
other passengers were hitch-hik
who were on their way north. The
truck is owned by Quesnel Sawmills.

A coroner's ju as called Satur-
day to view the body and the inquest
was adjourned pending arrival of
out-of-town witnesses.
