Medical Association And Health
Branch Issue Statements
On Supply Of Polio Vaccines

When will supplies of the

Salk polio vaccine be available

to the general public through private physicians? What, if any

priority of use will be followed?

These are several of the’

questions in the minds of Canadians that the Canadian Medicat
Association and the B.C. Health Department have sought to
answer in a recent release on the question. —

The medical association reports:
“The Connaught Medical Research
Laboratories is at present the only
agency which is producing polio-
myelitis vaccine in Canada. The cur-
rent immunization for 900,000 Cana-
dian school children is in the hands
of the public health agencies and is
actually being administered. Plans
under way will provide material for
the innoculation of a further 2,000,-
000 persons within the next
This will protect the children in the
most susceptible age groups and will
place Canada in the forefront of na-
tions in proportion to our population.

In addition to this important
basic source of vaccine for Canadians
a further supply will shortly be avail-
able through the Canadian affiliates
of the pharmaceutical houses in the
United States which have participat-
ed in the production of the Salk vac-
cine. At present two such firms haye
been liceneced by the Department of
Notional Health to distribute the ap-
proved product and doubtless others
will subsequently be licenced. No
vaccine from the United States has
been made available through these
agencies but it is expected that
limited supplies will be released
across Canada in the near future
When this will be available and in
what quantities cannot be predicted
with accuracy but it may be assumed
that the immediate supply will not
be large.

The manufacturers. have, assessed
as accurately as possible the require-
ments of practicing physicians and
have made preparations for the equit-

conserving the supply and. utilizing
it where it will be most effective.
PRIORITIES

Priorities in the administration of
the vaecine may vary from province
to province but the following is set
forth as a gnid

(1) School children aged 5 to 8;
(2) pre-school children and children
aged 9-12; (3) pregnant women;
(4) nurses attending polio patients,
and children of such attendants; (5)
other children aged 12 to 20.

Such evidence indicates that fam-
ily contacts of poliomyelitis patients
should be immunized, but the more
logical management of family con-
tact is passive immunization with
Gamma Globulin followed by active
immunization with Poliomyelitis
vaccine.

Until the supply of poliomyelitis
vaccine catches up with the demand,
great discretion will be required and
you can assist your doctor by not in-
sisting that he administer vaccine to
individuals whose priority is low and
whose need for protection is not
immediate.

STATEMENT OF
HEALTH DEPARTMENT

In consultation with the Health
Branch, Department of Health and
Welfare, Province of British Col-
the above broad principles
received their full support.

As you are aware. there are some
49,000 Grade 1 and pre-school chil-
dren (entering school Sept. 1953)
in B.C. receiving Salk vaccine prior
to the end of the school term in June
1955. This is being administered
through yrur local health services
and further information regarding
details of this program have been
made available through your Health
Unit Directors. =

The future policy- of the Health
Branch is dependent on the vacciné
supply. It is, however the policy of
the branch to extend vaccination
programs as rapidly as possilbe to
those groups ‘where the need is great-
est, based on the attack rate.

The extension of this program will
be as rapid as possible, and further-
more, the policy will follow along
the lines of the present policy rela-
tive to use of biologicals for com-
municable disease control in this
province, namely the issuance of bio-
logicals will be on a-free basis to
practicing physicians, and this vaccin-
ation will be available through the
practicing physician or local health
services dependent on the wishes of
the parents or individuals them-
selves.
