Total number of persons reg- istered for jobs at the end of June was approximately half ‘the total registerea during the same month last year. Evidence of the improved job situation was also shown in the continu- ing upswing in the number of employment opportunities. There were growing signs o shortages of applicants in som skilled and semi-skilled classi- fications. The sum of $1,823,937 paid out in was the month of May. $1,727,711 less than was pai out the previous month, paid out in the same period year ago. unemployment insurance benefits in B.C. during This was and $2,455,000 less than the amount sf e The speculation, dreams and S| guesses are over and the St. Lawrence Seaway is in full §| swing And the Seaway is performing just about the way everyone thought it would. id Larger ocean ships are ing through the canals Bi and mooring 1,00 miles further west than they had ever before. one. tomorrow—just wash and drip-dry. Ask to see.them today! Vg KES Fire The Welland Canal is bottleneck and most of the Unites States Lakes ports are unprepared for the deeper ocean ships. Canada's Great Lakes fleet will be smaller with many of the older and smaller canalers ready for the scrap pile. But there are the new and huge lake ships that were built for the Seaway. Toronto quickly assumed the position as the best and leading overseas port on the waterway. Chicago and Milwaukee dom- inate the United States picture, although behind Toronto. Grain is moving east and the Labrador iron ore is moving west—giving Canada its first two-way trade along the lakes. The ore is moving for United States mills and represents the new era of iron ore, when it will move from east to west instead of the traditional west-east route. a TRAFFIC UP rs Ocean traffic is up although even the ardent Seaway boosters concede many ships are plying the lakes in search of cargo and will not return unless the export business starts to boom. This is the only Seaway pre- diction that has not been ful- filled since there are more ships and they are larger. But the Seaway itself isn't the end to the water transporta- tion and construction boom. The Seaway cities may easily St. Lawrence Seaway | benefits all Canada match in new port facilities the $1,500,000,000 spent to develov the Seaway and the power faci- lities along the St. Lawrence. Actually the entire Seaway isn’t in operation yet and prob-| ably will not be until 1962. | The Detroit River still has| to be deepened and so does the Sault Ste. Marie Canal. And everyone now concedes | Canada is responsible for the canal. In 1954, fed up with stalling and debates in the United States Congress, Canada prepared to go it alone on the Seaway. The U.S. quickly entered the project. But there were some geo- graphical allies for Canada’s stand, too. The Mesabi iron ore range in northern Minnesota was slowly beginning to peter out and the new ore fields were in Labra- dor. POWER, TOO A less known part of the Sea- way is the huge power plants that were erected by Ontario Hydro and the New York State Power Authority and will event- ually generate more than 1,900,000 kilowats of electricity. Economically the Seaway links the two major industrial areas of the western world. It links the complex of west- ern Europe with the. industrial might of the north-eastern U.S. and southern Ontario. As Toronto and Hamilton be- come ocean ports, so does Fort William .. . and the granary of Canada moves 1,000 closer to the sea. The Seaway, despite tolls, means a reduction of 3.5 cents a bushel for North American | grain going to world markets And the imports for Winni- peg and the west will be mov- ing cheaper than ever before. miles ‘Dambusters’ will passing interest Watching the playing over and over of the film “ Dam- busters” will be no chore for Eddie Pigeon of Alexis Creek when he shows the film later LIMI | Call Today F.
