LUMBER WORKER il Busy Committee | eee TROPHIES and prizes won by contestants at the Annual Picnic of Local 1-217, IWA, were awarded by the special committee of ladies from the Women’s Auxiliary, here seen at the rear of the display. Their popularity with the youngsters was ace-high. Special. Skills Built Success By BOB LUDWIG The Swedish Park in North Vancouver was the place, and Saturday, July 24, was the day for the annual picnic, ‘of Local 1-217, IWA. The most conservative esti- mates indicate that some 2500 children crowded through the gates. If you add to this num- ber a fair sprinkling of parents and other relations you will read- ily understand what is meant by the term, “Big Picnic”. Special Skills. A lot of special skills went into the job of making this picnic a success. For instance, few members knew that Bert Full- james has outstanding talent for handling cracked ice. Bert show- ed-that he could handle 50-pound bags of the stuff just like he knew all along it was for cooling soft drinks, Sam Groutage, working with a small corps of assistants, waved about 1500 cars into close posi- tion. When last seen he was studying a map of North Van, looking for more empty lots. A platoon of other members which included Emmett Holmes and Les Bradley, kept the ice eream and drinks moving. Tom Clarke could be seen in a hot kitchen stirring a vat of what looked like coffee with what look- ed like a canve paddle. “The Voice” . Charley Le Marthe threw his lungs and voice into the P.A. system. He is now known as “The Voice’. Tommy Haggart was active in so many jobs that he was seen in at least three dif- ferent places at the same time. Arranger Harry Bardsley kept a sharp eye on every detail, it is thought that he selected the ideal weather. Stu Hodgson’s success on the tug-of-war rope is attributed by some to his navy background. Others think it was sheer ton- nage that did the trick. And with all this even the kids had fun. Fact is it was a very worth- while day for the young ones, and obviously a couple of thousand happy kids make for the nicest kind of Public Relations.
