Defeated OTTAWA (CPA)—Pressure by the federal government, to ensure that a Bill widening the grounds for divorce did not come before the Commons, was behind the defeat of the measure in the Senate, the Bill’s sponsor has hinted, Had the Bill been approved by the Upper House, it would have gone to the Com- mons thus forcing Liberal mem- bers to take a stand on the mat- ter. The Bill, introduced by Sen. Walter Asseltine (Conservative— Sask.), would have added the grounds of cruelty and incurable insanity to Canada's sole present grounds for divorce — adultery. The widened provisions would not have applied to the provinces operation, ‘Feeling fine. of Newfoundland and Quebec which do not have divorce courts. Instructions from Below Senator Asseltine’s Bill was de- feated by a vote of 37 to 20 thus avoiding the necessity of forward- ing the proposal to the House of Commons for consideration. The Senator commented: “What really defeated my Bill was the votes of Ontario Protestant Senators, act- ing on instructions from below”, Adultery remains the sole grounds for divorce in the cight provincial divorce courts in Can- ada and in Parliament, which grants divorces to Quebec and Newfoundland residents. A mother was telling her 6- year-old son about the golden rule. “Always remember,” she said, “that we are here to help others.” The youngster mulled this over for a minute and then asked: “Well, mom, what are others here for?” s 8 & Small boy to father playing with his Christmas train: “What this railroad really needs is a good retirement plan.”
