PAGE 2, THE HERALD, Friday, September 15, 1978 CN to reduce train crews VANCOUVER (CP) Canadian National Railways and the United Tran- Sportation Union have reached an agreement on reducing by one the size of crews on freight trains in Western Canada, industry sources said Thursday, Under the agreement, most through freight trains will operale with one con- ductor and one trainman instead of two trainmen, informed sources said. it is a separation plan under which UTU members can retire early with 80 per cent of their regular pay until normal retirement at 65. The employee has to be 55 years of age and = ac- cumulated 30 years’ service qualifying him under Audition date change In the Tuesday, September 12 edition of the Daily Herald we reported that the date for auditions for the Terrace Little Theatre’s production “Varieties” would take place on Monday, September the 18. The Director has since changed that date to the following evening which is Tuesday, September 19 at 7:30 pm, at the Little Theatre, 3625 Kalum., ; “Varieties’’ Is scheduled for performance in November. Experience is not necessatily - a prerequisite Lo trying out for a role in this play. existing early relirement. . -The agreement speeds up the natural rate of attrition . with the 80-per-cent rate offer based on an employee's best five years of earnings. The sources said 400 irainmen will be phased out during the next five years. The UTU has 4,000 members in the West. NO TROUBLE SEEN Solirees said they do not expect to run into any significant reluctance on the — part of the workers since they can earn almost as much staying at home in- slead of going to work. Many would find other work. The railway hasbeen seeking reductions since a central traffic signal system made it possible to open and close mainline switches from a dispatch office instead a trainman doing it manually. Joietsee Sources said CN hopes the relirement deal will be - jj pickedup in the UTU eastern jurisdiction since it is con- sidered a breakthrough for railway bargaining. It is also considered significant because CN and CP Rail start’ bargaining with all railway unions next month to renewing contracts that expire Dec. 3t. =. ' : The road project, which hag been extended by mines ministry personel north of Fort Si. James to Moose Valley at a cost of $4.2 million, has been severly criticized by the B.C. Wildlife Federation which says the extension was built at an “incalculable cost to the environment.” The report supports feder- ation charges thal en- vironment damage has taken place. . “We're saying lhe same things other government agencies have said before,’ said Mark Walmsley, headof Where Westemers win all-ways the resource analysis branch's soils planning division. “This road has very serious environmental consequences." ‘Aside from the damage to the landscape, which is an engineering problem, the most serious impact is the aceess the road provides to virgin wilderness,’’ said Walmsley. ‘It leaves the Spatsizi Wilderness Park wide open.” COULDN'T WAIT Federation spokesman Les Storey, who has pressed the mines department — lo abandon its road-building operation said “‘it’s obvious mines was in toa much of a hurry to wait for the en- vironmental recommenda- tions and these are the con- séquences."" “The report makes an even stronger case than we Western Canada Lottery Foundation eae did, and we've been saying the road is an environmental disaster, but the branch is also saying what's needed is much more study.” The report says the road will lead to increased access to virgin land areas and significant loss of wildlife habitat will occur because animals avoid areas of disturbance, as well as areas adjacent to it. The purpose of the road is to encourage mineral ex- ploration and the report says that because of this, there is also a danger that this will resull in further intrusion on wildlife.
