Fire at Giggy’s
Mill Saturday
Caused a Loss

A spectacular fire destroyed the new
hoiler house of the Inter-Valley Lum-
ber. Co. eurly on Saturday evening.

During the week the concrete had
Deen poured for the foundations and
wills for the boller, “With the coming
of the cold snap it beeame necessary

to keep fires going in the pit to allow

the concrete to set. Men had been
working rowund the pit all day, and af-
ter five o'clock the night watehman
took over the job.
watchman went to another part of the
plant and on his return in four or five
ininutes be found ‘a fire raging in the
north end of the building. He notiti-
od Mr. Giggy, owner of the plant, and
then-ran to the town alarm box.

There was a very high wind when

the fire broke out and the temperature

was down-around the zero mark, It
made tough fighting for the volunteer
brigade, Mr, Giggy soon “realized that
it wus uw iwaste of-time to try to save
the bofler house and requested the
helpers to try and save bis house just
a few yards away. A crew of men got
on the roof and a bucket brigede was
formed. Forest Ranger Cooper was
soon on the job with a bunch of forest
service hose’ which was connected up
with the municipal, hydrant on Kalum
street. . Water was ‘soon on the’ house
nnd as it hit. ‘the: ‘root it turned to ice
and made a- ‘perfect protection. jAt
the sume time other helpers looked af-
ter the lumber piles and other parts of,
the mill buildings. Although ‘the mill
wis only a few feet. from. ‘the fire it
wus not even scorched, oe

by seven o'clock and the walls were
down. Frank Pongrac, who lives only
a short distance away did good work,
He was one of the first there and first
on the roof of the residence.

While the loss is serious it might
have been worse, but the gale was in
the right direction to save the mill

-and the house. The value of the vil-

lage pump which is used to suppliment
the water supply was demonstrated at
this fire. As soon as the alarm was
sounded the commissioners had the
pump started and a good water pres-
sure was maintained,
