Riverboat Days beer garden geis approval _-.- The Kinsmen Club of Terrace has received ap- proval from Terrace municipal council to hold the club’s annual - tavern and beer garden event in Riverside Park. The open-air festival will be held August 1,2 and 3 in conjunction with Riverboat Days. Featured events are to in- clude a triathlon, a belly- flop contest, tug-of-war, softball tournament and, — of course, beer consump- tion. In a letter received by Terrace council at its April 14 meeting, the Kinsmen Club offered to install a permanent hydroelectric outlet and an exterior water tap at . Riverside Park in ex- change for use of the park. The proposal received unanimous ap- proval from council members. Kinsmen volunteers Nathan Waddell (top) and Steve Mcisack (below) wrapped cable and chains around the top of the stack, and a few moments later, wih the persuasion of a glant-sized tow truck, the upper section crashed to the ground. Bricks from the chimney were sold as part of a Kinsmen fund-ralsing project. Activity begins at new building site TERRACE — Excava- tion and site preparation began last week at the lot on Eby St. where the new Terrace RCMP building will eventually appear. Brian Lewis, job foreman for general con- tractor Hegge Construc- tion, said in a recent in- - terview that he expects to have the foundation for the structure poured and the grade beams laid out by mid-May. Job foreman Brian Lewis forecasts that the foundations will be poured and grade beams In place by mid-May. over possible labor dif- ficulties at the site have been laid to rest by the contractor’s hiring and purchasing policies. ‘‘In spite of some of the gar- bage that was being said before this job started,”' Lewis stated, ‘‘our intent - is to obtain labor and materials from local sources whenever ‘possi- ble.’’ Lewis evaluated his crew's performance to date as ‘‘excellent’’. John MacCormac, business agent for the local Carpenters’ Union, said, ‘“We’re extremely happy that they’re hiring local people. The wage is nowhere near union rate, but we’ve got some peo- . ple here in desperate situations.’” MacCormac said that he’s sent two carpenters to the job so far, and he expects to eventually have about six of his union’s members employed on the site. Bruce Ferguson, spokesman for the Tun- nel and Rock Workers local, also expressed satisfaction. ‘‘We're quite pleased,’’ Ferguson said. ‘‘They're using a union workforce and coming to us with their requirements,’‘ Fer- guson added that his local has placed three laborers on the site and expects further requests _as the construction pro- gresses. Bob Jackman at the April 14 council meeting. Jackman noted that the district owns some types of equipment, such as street sweepers, which are not available through private sector leasing operations. The monthly report from the Terrace Fire Department to municipal council indicated that the department responded to 30 calls during March, 17 of which actually involv- ed fires. Seven: of the fires were in residential dwellings, nine were in - open areas and one was a motor vehicle fire. Resulting damages were estimated at about $35,000, . Animal control officer Frank Bowsher reported that his department im- pounded 55 animals dur- ing March. Of these, 10 were released to the owners and !5 were adopted. Bowsher in- -dicated that 14 dogs and 10 cats were destroyed during the month at the animal shelter. Removal notices, he stated, were sent out to two local residents who have established pigeon coops in contravention of municipal bylaws.
