PORT COQUTITAM MONTY Er ORT FOR MAY 1981 154 hours worked this month. 6 hours of lieu time were taken, 56 files: 23 in Port Coquitlam; 33 in Coquitlam This month a majority of my time has been Spent relating to juveniles and/or their familics. Meany of these Situations have been referred by police, some referred by schools, anda growing number of people have been calling the office asking fox my intervention/assistance. Many factors culminate to make May at month where juveniles might becoma restless. Some of these factors are: jonger days, warmer weather, latter days of school term, young people demanding more Privileges, plus parents might be applying more pressure in an attempt to maintain control. The following are examples of situations I dealt with this month: (1) A mother of a teenage girl contacted me with concerns about her daughter's behaviour. The daughter, falling Prey to peer pressure, was involved in drinking, smoking dope, staying out late and was suspected.of having sexual relations with a boyfriend. he mother had attempted to talk with the daughter about this behaviour only to meet with hostility and even more acting out. — ‘the girl's school marks were also being greatly affected by her hehaviour and the school counsellor's Were concerned. I met with the mother and daughter for a couple of hours and we. were able to sort out a few things and negotiate gome mutually acreed upon rules fox curfew time, etc. I dia a follow-up on this situation a couple of weeks later to Aiscover that things were going much better, although the mother felt: they had lots to work on. At least they were having more conversation about feelings, concerns, etc . (2) I spent time with the mother of a young teenage girl who was quite upset when she discovered her daughter was no longer a virgin. © talkea with the girl about her behaviour and also with the boyfriend. The boy was a known trouble maker who appeared to be using the girl. The teenage Girl was secking independence from her parents and anxious to be involved in adult activities. (I think we Say, "Thirteen going on twenty-five" :) (3) The parents of a teenr a boy were anxious to speak with me. Their son had bean causing more and more concern for them in recent weeks. His school marks were dropping. They knew he was drinking and mayhe smoking dope, Also, his’ frionds seemed to have: a growing influence on his behaviour. The real crisis issue was that he had been wissing for several days. They knew he was in the area but as yet he had not returned home, My time was spent relating to the Parents who were victims, in that they were going through a lot of pain with their son Still missing. ah NA Ney. ¥ we SS Qo, a “TS Cees Robert W. sLOocomBE Communi ty Resources Co-Ordinator
