Every student In Uplands Elementary School released a hellum-filied | balloon containing the title of their favorite book during Library Week. The balloons rose and drifted with the random currents of a gentle north wind to carry the word to everyone in Terrace that there are hundreds of books in libraries everywhere that can lift and carry your mind to unimagined “heights. Harrison said they had divid- ed the Skeena introduction into two phases this year to give the . ‘grade seven students more time . to absorb the information and therefore be better prepared for the move. . oe He explained that the first phase was held in local grade seven classrooms and was divid- ed into four segments: explain- ing what a counsellor does, presenting 4 photographic tour of the school, describing the skills required in grade eight, and detailing the various clubs and extracurricular activities of- . fered by Skeena. .- - * During the presentation, Har- -Yison said, .they explained to students that a counsellor is not concerned with’ discipline but is there to help the individual stu: : dent. He explained that a counsellor is a confidential friend available to assist in course and career choices and who also deals with individual personal problems ranging from courses or teachers all the way to private or family | difficulties. = = ==» ‘Harrison said most grade the inside of Skeena, ‘and a slide presentation had been prepared to ease imaginative minds by ‘portraying life in the school as — a ‘‘pretty interesting’ with a great’ variety of classroom and ex- tracurricular activities.. _ “It?s a good school to come to,’ Harrison said. “‘A good place to make friends, not only. with people from your cwn school but also with those who come from other schools.’’ ; He also stressed the skills re- - quired at the junior secondary level which include: the impor- tance of being organized, the im- portance of doing your homework in grade seven so you are prepared for grade eight, and the need to have a homework book to keep track of homework. Harrison said that during a question period following the presentation, a lot of students expressed concern over initiation day and ‘“‘big kids in the school’’, He said he explained to them, ‘‘The vice-principal is in the school to handle situations like that. No student can. be in- timidated — we just. won’t. tolerate it.”’ ‘According to Harrison, the se- cond half of the introduction to Skeena will be held next spring, and it will lay out the courses the students are required to take.
