THE €GRPOQRATION OF THE CITY OF PGRT COGHITLAN Re: Pwe ~2- May 7, 1981. ITEM IT Re: Request for STOP siqns The Committee has received a request for STOP signs at two locations. These are on Knappen Street at Pooley Avenuca and on Pooley Avenue at Taylor Street. Both of these locations have children crossing the intersection to get to the school. Knappen Street has recently been opened at both ends so it is now a through street. The attached sketch indicates the present location of STOP signs in the area and the location of the proposed STOP signs. The Committee recommends that these STOP Signs be approved. ITEM IIT Re: Request for Crosswalk across Prairie Ave. at Newberry St. A letter from Mr. and Mrs. Keith Ballantyne dated January 11, 1981 was considered by the Committee. This letter, a copy which is attached, requested a reinstallation of the above crosswalk which had been relocated to Regina Street. The letter makes the point that crosswalks in themselves are not unsafe but that it is the way people drive or cross the street which is at fault for the high accident rate within cxosswalks. Mr. Ballantyne is precisely correct in that state- ment. However, it is for this reason that the City has attempted to keep the number of crosswalks to a minimum. There is no doubt that we could find sufficient people crossing at almost any point along Prairie Avenue to "justify" the installation of crosswalks. However, the installation of all these crosswalks would simply result in even less respect paid by the drivers towards them. The crosswalk as presently located provides for a majority of the crossing needs to the school and to other major traffic generators. The Committee does not recommend the reinstallation of a crosswalk at Newberry Street. ITEM IV @: Mr. and Mis. R. Coville - Cracking of fish tank Mr. and.
