COUN EB 24° 1975: SHAFT (Survive, Hope, Attempt, Feel, Trust) (an alternate to school) c/o D.H.R. ~ 2802 St. Johns St., Port Moody, B.C. 939-4134 The SHAFT program is a co-educational alternative to school in School District No. 43 (Coquitlam) for teens, ages 14 to 16 inclusive, and Grades 8 - 10. There is a qualified teacher on staff and four Child Care Counsellors. SHAFT is co-sponsored by the Department of Human Resources and School District No. 43. SHAFT offers instruction which could lead to accreditation through correspondence or an individualized up~grading program. - . SHAFT offers life learning experiences through a variety of crafts, recreation, field trips, community involvement and a variety of cultural: activities._ The Counsellors work with the teens in small groups or ona ene to one besis ‘and family co-operation and involvement is expected. The teens in the program have a background of some trouble with the schools, law, or their families. De es ex The cost of the program is determined by ability to pay and will be discussed on Registration evening. There will be-a school bus ¢rss issued, and.a small fee for certain activities (i.e. skate rentals.) There will’ not be a-pick up of students and.regular attendance is mandatory: —_ The referrals may be made. by any agency, school or ty family. Please fill.in a referral form.and return it to SHAFT. Applicants are screened on a basis— of need and order of referral. Some referrals will be discussed with the referring agency and alternative programs suggested when possible.
