THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER 1-71 OFFICERS WIN PAY FOR INSTRUCTORS The four-month-old dispute between Local 1-71 and the Crown Zellerbach Company over the principle of paying additional money to employ- ees who instruct trainees dur- ing job training programmes, has now been settled. Local President Ernie Freer and ist Vice-President Ben Thompson secured a letter of understanding from the Com- pany which provides that any employee acting as an in- structor must be paid an ad- ditional ten cents an hour. ann es ERNIE FREER Freer and Thompson had negotiated a similar clause last December in a Memor- andum of Agreement for a job training programme to cover all the Company’s log- ging operations in the Local’s jurisdiction. Three weeks after the Agreement was signed, the Company notified the Local that it was revoking the doc- ument. In an attempt to jus- tify its action, the Company _ accused the Local of negotiat- ing in bad faith. It stated that the Union was trying to use the clause as a lever to force other forest industry compan- ies to accept the principle of paying additional money to instructors. Company officials admitted privately, however, that pres- sure from the other compan- ies who feared the clause would establish a precedent, had been the real reason for reneging on the Agreement. The: Local officers, justifi- ably angered by the cancella- tion, immediately retaliated by informing their Crown Zellerbach members not to participate in any of the Company’s training program- mes until the negotiated terms of the Agreement were lived up to. The officers also blasted the Company for jeopardiz- ing the future of industry job training at a time when it BEN THOMPSON was so necessary for both Un- ion and Management to try and devise ways and means of solving some of the prob- lems posed by automation and technological change. Crown Zellerbach officials, realizing they were in a vul- nerable position with the Un- ion, finally contacted the Lo- cal officers March 10 to dis- cuss settlement of the dispute. Freer reported that during the discussions, Tony Poje, the Company’s representative, made every effort to be co- operative in order to resolve the problem and his attitude played a large part in the dis- pute being settled on an amic- able basis. Copies of the amended plan and of the letter of under- standing have been forward- ed by the Local Union to all its Camp Committees in the Crown Zellerbach operations.
