THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER HARTUNG PAYS LAST OFFICIAL VISIT TO LOCAL 1-424 Retiring IWA International president A. F. Hartung told fifty members attending the Quarterly Meeting of Local 1-424 IWA, Prince George, July 23, that he saw no reason why Interior woodworkers shouldn’t receive as good or better wages than Coast woodworkers. Hartung, who was in the Local Union to install the Prince George officers, was optimistic that the Union would achieve a good settle- ment from the employers. During his address he em- phasized the need for greater organizing efforts now to pro- tect future bargaining, He stated that less than fifty per- cent of the Interior -wood- workers were organized and the Union must make an all out effort to make every woodworker a union mem- ber. Referring to the irrevoca- ble trend to automation in the forest industry, Hartung said with more men being displaced by machines “we have to organize like the devil just to stand still.” Hartung stated that an- other problem confronting unions was the growing power of ‘big business.. He said the 200 largest corpora- tions in the United States now control 51 percent of all business, and the percentage is growing annually. He added that this massive and growing power of big business is one of the great- est challenges to the labour movement.
