The Canadian Universities = Foundation has announced _ that applications will be re- ceived from Canadian trade unionists for the Nuffield Foundation Travelling Fel- lowships, 1965. Each year the Nuffield Foundation offers two Travel- ling Fellowships to enable Canadian trade unionists to spend five to six months in the United Kingdom, either in study, observation or en- quiry, with the object of im- proving their usefulness to their own organizations. In Canada, the awards are ad- ministered by the Canadian Universities’ Foundation. The Fellowships are intend- ed for men or women of high quality who have already shown capacity of an unusual order and whose application is supported by their unions. Candidates must be Canadian citizens. z FINANCIAL VALUE A Fellow will normally be paid a grant for travel amounting to the equivalent Nuffield Foundation Fellowships offered to Canadians of first-class return travel by air from his point of depar- ture to his point of destina- tion, together with other in- cidental door-to-door. travel- ling expenses. The expenses of his wife will be covered on the same basis, provided that she accompanies him for a minimum of three months. In addition, the Foundation will pay a stipend at the rate of £120 per month (single) or £180 (married and accom- panied by wife) and an al- lowance of £100 for travelling in the United Kingdom. It is expected that the organiza- tion will grant the Fellow leave of absence on at least half-salary basis and that this period of leave will count as normal service for all pur- poses. OBLIGATIONS A Fellow will be expected to return to his work in the Trades Union Movement in Canada on the completion of his Fellowship. On the completion of his Fellowship, a Fellow will be required to submit a report to the Foundation and to his Department on his work dur- ing his Fellowship. Should the trustees of the Nuffield Foundation at any time find that a Fellow ne- glects, or has neglected, the obligations implicit in the Fellowship award, they shall have the power immediately to terminate the Fellowship. BACK TO SCHOOL Governor Rosselini of Wash- ington has issued an order re- quiring all employees of the state whose duties include operation of a motor vehicle to complete a defensive driv- ing course conducted by the Washington State Patrol. Over 300 children attended the affair and each was given a gift from “Santa” as well as a bag of candy. The day was touched off by 300 the showing of three cartoon films which made the day complete for the kids. The ladies deserve much credit for the successful af- fair as this was their first ef- fort to hold an event of this size since the Auxiliary was formed a few months ago.
