COUNC BRIEF TO MUNICIPAL COUNCILS NOV -~3 1975 Re. New Library Headquarters Building ° - For some time the Board of Management of the Fraser Valley Regional Library has been deeply concerned about the inadequacy of its headquarters building in Abbotsford. The Board's Building Committee has put in many hours of -work on the project in the last two years and following the appointment of Mr. Gordon Yuen, B. Arch., M.R.A.I.C., as architect in July, the Board has recently given approval in principle to design work he has produced. To inform Council about the project and the reasons for it, the fe Board of Management has directed me to submit this brief for Council's attention. The present headquarters building was constructed in 1953 on land donated by the Village of Abbotsford. A - second floor was added in 1960, the total floor space now being 10,834 sq. ft. This expansion was a direct result of growth of library service threughout the Valley, i.e. in the seven years before 1960 the number of books borrowed increased by 123% and since 1960 it has increased in like amount. Today in 1975 with an annual circulation of more than 2 1/2 million books and films, and a bookstock of 380,000 volumes in 30 branches, the Fraser Valley Regional Library is seriously hampered by the overcrowded conditions of its own administrative headquarters. . 6 « Continued Brie€ divterbuled * separately te Coon!
