We don't read avery book in the library just because they are there. We use the library selectively. Why should our approach to television be any different? Shouldn't we use TV selectively? Granted. television's immediate availability makes Seleclive viewing difficult but certainty not impossible. Your local program listings are probably the best place to begin. More often than not the program lislings are read as a guide of what to watch, Why sof try using them as a guide ot what not to watch? Let your children ~~ read the listing of the evening selections to the entire family and then decide as a family what you are going to watch. Making viewing selections as a family allows for discussion about whai makes a good program and. conversely. a bad one. Regular reading of the listings will also alert you to the outstanding special programs which television has to offer. Television critics are also an excellent source of information about “what's on.” Most critics wilt review ihe spec:al programs and. in between specials. they will offer their views on television's weekly fare. You may nol always agree with them but the critics can help you be more selectivein your. television viewing. : Finally, there may be nights—not often and undoubtediy with some dissent—when you decide as a family that “nothing good is on." On those nights, having accustomed yourselves to prime time being family time. you can redirect your family’s attention to ‘anothar “togetherness” activily—reading a story. playing a game. going toa movie. making something. How much better it is then to decide to watch television rather than to simply watch it because “it is day IDLER: SPECIAL," lo bent . uy VOSHSUZ 187 | WINS PRIZE PARIS (Reuter) ~~ U.S, writer ieee) be man Was award@r FFance’s Grand Prix de Lit- terature Policiere (crime novel prize) Tuesday for his book City of the Dead.
