More and more it is obvious that Premier Jean Lesage of Quebec nd his super-nationalists are eading Prime Minister Pearson s if he were a blind, docile can- Ine on a leash. This, of course, not to be disrespectful of the Ruchec government or of the peo- ble in Quebec. It’s simply that the Mevovernment of Quebec recognizes hat it can have its own way with the government of Canada, S The most recent disclosure of € manner in which this poli- Hical osmosis works came just a few days: ago when the govern: ent of Quebec wrote to Prime dinister Pearson and said to put he so-called Fulten-Favreau for: ula for amending Canada’s Con- Ftitution in the deep freeze. With- but, as he claima, knowing any- ing about the letter from Jean esage to Lester Pearson, ex-Just- ice Minister Favreau . made a peech in which he said it would a good idea to postpone the ans regarding the Fulton-Fay- eau formula, m™ The Fulton-Favreau formula is mso named because the ex-Conser- me vative Justice Ministér Fulton de- im veloped it and the ex-Liberal Just- fice Minister Favreau adopted it. a Now, Mr. Favreau says that he wants to be an ex-supporter of the plan as well as an ex-Justice min- ister, The interesting, and sad, part of this game is that Favreau and the Liberals only supported the plan because it suited Quebec at that particular time. There wasn’t any thought given to the matter by the Liberals in Ottawa — they TERRACE DRUGS Kolum Street VI3-2727 Gpen Sunday 12-2 p.m, “YOUR REXALL STORES” —Lakelse Pharmacy Super-Valu Shopping Centre P VI 3-5617 Open Sunday 7 - 9 p.m. PRESCRIPTION SERVICE DRUGS - SUNDRIES Wiringin. .. * Specializing in... “ELECTRIC 3507 Hanson Rd. - Ta ‘to rejoin the firm of Murdock R. | 9 Bruno’s ELECTRICAL SHOP LTD. Conferences with local union leaders wili be held in an effort to recruit assistance in drawing up a deduction plan that meets with the approval of most employees. Leaders will be contacted next week and invited to attend an Arena Association executive meet- ing on Monday, February 7 in the Terrace Hotel, The Arena executive hopes to come up with a payroll deduction plan which calls for regular volun- tary contributions of a nominal degree, designed to create no un- due strain on donors. Members of the Arena executive will also contact businesses in the Terrace area which do not operate under union agreements, in an effort to set up a similar contri- bution plan with employers and employees, ae Returns. To Terrace To Rejoin Law Firm P.. Guy Williams, barrister and solicitor, has ‘returned to Terrace Robertson and Associates. He doesn’t want the Constitution brought back from England for amending purposes for that doesn’t suit the desires of Quebec, He would sooner have us genuflect our way to London each time we want to make amend- ments to the B.N.A. Act, which is our Constitution. Ive said it before and I'll say it again; Prime Minister Pearson acts as if he were a diplomatic re- presentative from another planet. As a result, he is always ready to compromise — always ready to meet the demands of the other person or governments — always Teady to cater to a more powerful voice — always ready to let some- one else do his thinking for him. What's the result? It's bad for Canada for it merely adds fuel to the growing fires of nationalism (or perhaps provincialism is the better word). The unifying force of the federal government is zet- ting to be‘like that of a four cylin: der engine with only ane spark- plug. Regrettably, people in Western Canada are getting a little fed up with this sort of thing for we can see in it the eventual break-up of Canada as it exists today. When selfish, political interests in one part of a nation have so much power, influence and control, what is to happen to the ofher parts? J know the people at home are pon- dering this question. The Prime Minister should be pondering it too. HEATING” WILLARD E.
