'I I I ~ I ~ I M4 I THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM PARKS & RECREATION COMMITTEE A meeting of the Parks & Recreation Committee was held in t'e Council Chambers on Thursday, February 28th, 1985, at 4:15 p.m. In attendance were Alderman Michael Wright, Alderman Laking. George Also in attendance were Alderman Mike Farnworth; Helen Janna Taylor, Parks RecreationFitch, Director; Bert Radlgruber, Reid's Department Store and Mr. May Day Coordinator; K. & Noort, Coquitlam Florists. CONFIRMATION OF MINUTES That the minutes of the meeting of the Parks & Recreation Committee held on Wednesday, January 23rd, 1985, be taken as read and adopted. Item No. 1 Undate on Mav Dav Mr. Radlgruber and Mr. Noort were in attendance to discuss the parade route for May Day. They were concerned that having the parade in downtown area, especially on the Mother's the weekend detracts from customers using theirDay stores. In order -or the parade to go through the downtown area this means that between two to two and a half hours is lost frbm business and people just do not come back to uti.lize their stores after, the parade. It. was also reported via Alderman Wright that Mrs. Wingrove of Wingroves Florist was also concerned the parade route going through the 'downtown wi.th area. The other concern expressed by Mr. Radlgruber and Mr. Noort was that do not I.ike the fact that May Day was held onthey the Mother's Day weekend. Alderman Wright pointed out that for, this year the date could not be changed; however,, it would be looked at for next year. Recommendation: That Helen Fitch and Janna Taylor come back to the Parks Recreaticn Committee with alternate parade routes for the 1985 May Day. & CARRIED„ /2 ~ I ~ tnl ~ Mr. Rattlgruber and Nr. Noort left at this time. Helen then gave an update on May Day in reqard to the children's events planned for that day and her report is attached. Bhe also indicated that the Chamber of Commerce wanted to have a reverse draw dinner during the May Day weekend under the umbrella of May Day as a fund-raising. dinner. The Committee agreed that, this time, we would be unable to fit this item at into the already busy schedule. Recommendation: That the Chamber of Commerce not have a reverse draw dinner during the 1985 Nay Day weekend. CARRIED Helen indi ated that things were moving along very well. Item Ho. 2 Minor Baseball — Purchase of Fence A letter is attached from the Minor Baseball Association in which they outline their desire for a fence to be located at Thompson Park. They are prepared to pay for the fence if the City initially purchases the fence and then bills the association. This sas1e was done last year for the fence at McLean process Park. would become the property of the CityTheof fence Port Coquitlam. Recommendation: That the City purchase a fence for Thompson Park and bill the Minor Baseball Association for the purcnase. CARRIED Item Nd. 3 Minor Baseball — Advertisina on Fence The Minor Baseball Association has requested that they be permitted to put advertising on the proposed fence for Thompson Park. The Committee felt that before item was taken to Council for consideration, this it would be requested that the Association solicit responses from the neighbours who would face the advertising. Port Coauitlam Fiaure Skatina Club The Port Coquitlam Figure Skati.ng club intends to hold their Carnival March 29th, 30th and 31st and they have reque. ted that they pay for only 50% of the ice rental charges Council, in the past, has allowed other tournaments at 50S of the facility rent:al. Recommendation That the Port Coquitlam Figure Skating Club, for their 1985 Winter Carnival pay only 50K of their ice costs. CARRIED Item No. 5 Concession Stand in Lions Park Attached is a letter from Mr. Alar Stembridge who has requested that he be permitted to put a food concession trailer in Lions Park and sell hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. The Committee discussed this at some length and felt that a concession in a park would not be appropriate. There would be problems of debris and also it was felt that the public entering the park may not necessarily wish to have this kind of operation in the park. ,/4 . i. I anticipate that the fence will be four feet in height, similar to the ones used in Coquitlam at their Ball Parka, although ours will be of a semi-permanent nature. Baseball budgetted $ 2,000.00 in 1985 for this purpose, aa shown on the budget we submitted through PCAAA.
