- Its planned $9 ‘million
rehabilitation centre in
Richmond the ‘‘Leslie R.
Peterson Rehabilitation
Centre’, in honour - of
contributions made by the
former labour minister - of
workmen’s: compensation
in B.C.

The annourteement was made
April 26 by W.C.B. Chairman
Cyril White, at a sod turning
ceremony at the 20-acre site on
Westminster Highway. in
Richmond,

The firstsod at the site for the
new centre was turned by the
Workmen’s Compensation
Board's first claimant, Thomas
Pickering, 87, of Burnaby. (Mr.
Pickering was injured two
hours after the Workmen’s
Compensation Act came into
effect January 1, 1917, when a
case of machinery parts slipped
and crushed his finger at the
Great Northern Dock in

Others taking part in the sod
turning ceremony included the
Honourable Leslie R. Peterson,
Attorney-General, the
Honourable James R. Chabot,

Minister of Labour, Mr. Ernue_ |,

Le Courts, M.L.A. for Richmond,
and His Worship Mayor W.H.
Anderson, Mayor of Richmond.
About 150 guests attended the
cremony.

Mr. White outlined Attorney-
General Peterson’s contribution
over the last ten years and said
he “has earned the lion’s share
of the credit for guiding ‘the
workmen's Compensation Act
of 1968 through the legislature.”
The new Act, which made into
law the major
recommendations of the Tysoe
Royal Commiission of Inquiry
into Workmen’s Compensation
in. British Columbia, not only
increased existing
compensation pensions for
widows, dependents and
disabled workmen, but also tied
these benefits to the Consumer
Price I Index.

“When Mr. Peterson learned
that the Workmen's
Compensation Board wanted to
purchase land for the purpose of
building a large rehabilitation
centre in Richmond, he
wholeheartedly supported the
idea and obtained an Order-in;
Gdancil from the gavernmentiof
British Columbia: for. the
purpose of buying
property," said Mr. White.
“The endorsement and support
of Mr. Peterson has been an
important facter in bringing
this rehabilitation centre into
the realm of the possible. He
has helped lo make possible a
great . step forward, for
workmen’s compensation tn
this province.”

permanent reminder that good
ideas can become _ real
achievements when men of
energy and goodwill work
toward them.” ;

rehabilitation centre, which will
supplement the existing
Rehabilitation’ Clinic in

The convalescenthospital and
residerice quarters will free
many badly needed beds in
general hospitals around the
province and- provide - living

travel to. Vancouver for
réhabilitation treatment at the
W.C.B. 's Rehabilitation Clinic
on 37th Avenue. ~

The convalescent hospital will
provide care for. workmen who
are in the interniediate stage
between intensive general
hospital and out-patient
treatment.

The six ‘storey residence tower
is designed to provide a non:
institutional, pleasant
environment, Each private
room will have its own
bathroom and balcony. Small
lounges for relaxation and T.V.
will be located on each floor and
the residence floors will be
‘carpeted to help provide a quiet.
atmosphere.

, Ata later date the hospital
and residence will be expanded
to accommodate as many as 300
and 600 patients respectively,
and an out-patient
rehabilitation clinic will be
added to the centre, /

_ Plans for the centre include
an administration area and
general office, cafeteria,
kitchen, auditorium, recreation
facilities. The residence
building will have direct access
to a landscaped roof area above
the main entrance. Hospital
patients will have access to this
| landscaped area aS soon as
| Upper nursing floors are added.
A two-level parking deck will
provide access to both the main
and ground floor levels of the
+ complex,
