die’s mother, Linda, said
Sunday as they left for home
in Manteca. ‘They said he
wasn't supposed to live.

"T believe he understands
that he doesn't have any
legs,” said Mrs. Smith, 23.
“And I also think he accepts
it, Weknew if we accepted it,
he would,”

Dr. Byron Aoki, director of
the pediatric intensive care
unit at Children’s Hospital,
sald the complication is
somewhat of a mystery.

“No one knows why it hap:
pens,” he sald, “It is known
te accompany chicken pox
on rere occasions and is
nearly always fatal."

noticed him rubbing a large
purple spot on his leg, but
thought it was an insect bite,

To prepare for Eddie's
homecoming his parents
have remodeled their house,
widening doorways for his

candy bar 1.6 metres long, 15
centimetres wide and five
centimetres thick.

The Guinness Bock of
World Records currently
carries no entry for largest
candy bar, the students said.
but they hope to change that,

Student government
leaders at the Roman
Catholic-run women's schoal
got the iden for a giant candy
bar from students at Smith
College in Northampton,
Maas,, who last year created
the world’s largeat ice cream
sundae.

The Connecticut students
had no trouble finding the in-
predients, John Tatigian, a
vice-president at Peter Paul
Cadbury Co., a leading
candy bar manufacturer,
also ip a trustee of the
college.
