TO: Council May 13th, 1974 he oY NY FROM: ‘Mayor Campbell Points to include in reply to Premier Barrett re amalgamation report: 1. We believe that bigness is not goodness and that our ultimate population of 55,000 makes Port Coquitlam a viable municipality. 2. It is important that the citizens are not further removed from their elected officials. 3. ‘We believe it to be more livable in the Lower Mainland if there are more alternative municipalities with their many different lifestyles. 4. We are a unique municipality in that we are bounded on three sides by water and the North by a portion of land that should for all purposes - geographically, culturally and serviceability - Le part of Port Coquitlam. Se ' Our citizens for many years accepted a heavier tax burden in order to have increased services and this would be to their disadvantage if amaigamation took place, 6. We are a well-balanced City with residential, apartments, industry and commerce. Our recreation and park facilities are adequate for years to come. We have strongly supported the Town Centre idea and it would be a great loss if a change took place. 7. It has been proven by using the example of other amalgamations that there will be no monetary gain for our citizens. 8. ' We have always been willing to co-operate with our neighbouring municipalities as shown by our leadership in the Justice Building. We do not support or agree with the idea of amalgamation and, therefore, “ -a study is not needed. F
