Province Will Endorse McBride Administration On March 28, the date fixed for the general election, the people of British Columbia will be given an opportunity to ex- press their opinion on the general record of the McBride admin- istration and the new railway policy recently announced. The result of the election is a foregone conclusion, So strong is the prevailing sentiment in favor of the policies of the present govern: ment that many delegates in the Liberal convention at Vancouver on Thuraday urged that efforts to contest the election would be worse than wasted, The progressive railway policy, including a program of con- struction which will in a few years furnish transportation to many of the newer portions of the province, must be favored even by the Liberals, while the other planks of the McBride platform are also certain to meet the wishes of a very large majority of the people. One of the most popular innovations promised by the government is the reform of the present antiquated system of taxation, The poll tax is at last to be done away with; and other exactions will be removed or reduced, in accordance with the recommendations of the tax commission, The campaign will not be unduly protracted, as only a fort- night will elapse between the official nominations and the day of polling, In Skeena district there will probably be no opposition to the Conservative candidate, uniess Duncan Ross, who engineered arally of the Prince Rupert Liberals the other day, decides to contest the seat, Advocate Groundhog Line That Haz-lton Conservative ; Association is in a flourishing con- dition is evident from the reports of the officers and executive board presented at the general meeting held on Monday evening, The principal business of the evening wasintroduced by R. §. Sargent, in a resolution urging the provin- cial government to adopt ‘such measures as may b2 n2essary to, ensure the building ofa railway fromn Hazelton through the agri- cultural and mineral districts of , the upper Skeena to the Ground- hog Basin coal fields. Vhe speak- ers all favored the ‘resolution, which .was unanimously adopted. It was also resolved that the aid of Conservative Association and Board of Trade of Prince Rupert should be sought in furtherance of the railway project, The president announced that Wm. Manson, member for Skeena, intended to visit Hazel- ton within afew weeks, to dis- cuss the requirements of the dis- trict. ‘ Sixty-two new members were added to the list, on recommen- dation of the executive board, Millions In Minerals _ Mining authorities who have followed the development of the mineral wealth of British Colum- bia for years are authority for the statement that the mines of this province have contributed over $400,000,000 to the wealth of the world, considerably over one-half of that having been pro- duced in the last ten years, Amendments to Coal Act Among the new legislation is a bill to amend the coal and petroleum act. The law now re- quires that a coal or petroleum claim shall be eighty chains by eighty chains, The minister pro- poses to take power to vary these measurements wherever the con- tour of the country renders this necessary, but not so as to make the alze of the claim substan- tially more or less than 640 acres. Proviaion is also to be made for renewal of lapsed licenses by payment of an additional twenty- fiva dollars within three months after the license has regularly expired. Another clause gives ‘the, minister power to cause a - survey to. be made of any lands held. undey.. coal or petroleum licerise and to charge the cost of \ guéh aurvey against such license, ’ At prédent-the holders of coal or supposed to have such surveys made but sometimes they don't oit Under this act any gov- ernment survey parties that may be in the field will survey what- ever coal or petroleum ‘claims may be encountered within their sphere of operations. . The Same Old War Cloud Belgrade, Feb. 27:—The pros- pect for the coming spring is viewed with increasing anxiety here. In the best informed quarters, both native and foreign, it is feared that the growing an- archy in European Turkey may lead to serious complications as soon as the respite afforded - by the present severe weather comes to an end, The first outbreak of trouble is anticipated on the side of Northern Albania, the usual period for the renewal of disturb- anees in this country being now only a few weeks off. The trihes- men are already exasperated at the refusal of the government to allow a discussion of their griev- ances in the chamber; the dissolu- tion and the return of the deput- ies to their respective districts seem likely to Increase their in- dignation and to prompt them to seek ‘redress by other than con- stitutional methods, Notwith- sianding the severe cold, the bands in Northern Albania increase from day to day, and conflicts with the troops have already occurred in the district between Ipek and Mitrovitza, | Hazelton Rifle Association The’ annual meeting of --the Hazelton Rifle Association will be held in the reading room, over Adams’ drug’ store, on~ Monday evening, March 11, at 8 o’clock, All members ‘are requested to attend, All rifles and unused mamunition must be returned to the Secretary before the date of the meeting. A Record Trip Judge Young arrived from Prince Rupert on Tuesday even- ing, having made a record ‘trip from the coast city, Leaving on the noon train on Monday, he reached Sealey at 4p, m. the following day, having driven from the end of steel with Dan Stewart and M. Sheady, -The judge returned to the coast yes- terday morning, by the stage. He will hold. the tiext ‘county court here as soon after the ar- rival of steel at the bridge as. potrolétim licenses are themselves | necessary. | -_ _———— THE OMINACA MINER, SATURDAY, MARCH 2, 1912, — LAND NOTICES COAL NOTICES _ Omineca Land District.
