INFO-PARENTS ee English version The annual FPFCB convention took place on November 24, 2002. The conference theme: “Pulling Together in the Same Direction”. More than 90 participants attended the various workshops and Saturday evening banquet. The educational workshops focussed on school planning committees (SPC). Since these committees will consist of three parents, one school teaching staff member, and the school principal, and will be responsible for recommending a plan for academic success to the CSF, we invited school principals, teachers, and CSF board members and staff to take part in the workshops. For the 75 participants, the day began with a brief overview of the role of the SPC in the CSF decisional structure. Participants then learned about the school planning committee manual, a partnership project prepared in concert with the ADEF (teachers), RDF (school principals), SCFP (support staff), CSF (francophone school board), and FPFCB (parents’ federation). This manual contains information needed to ensure proper operation of the school planning committee: its mandate, duties, operations, establishment, decision-making, etc. That afternoon, participants did some role-playing, taking part ina mock SPC meeting. This exercise helped them to understand some of the difficulties that school planning committee members will face, particularly matters relating to reaching a consensus. Indeed, with the exception of the acceptance of the plan for academic success, all SPC decisions must be by consensus. Judging from participants’ comments and the many favourable remarks on the workshop evaluation sheets, it appears that participants greatly appreciated the conference workshops. Participants realize that it will not be easy to set up the committees, but they feel that they will receive strong support from the FPFCB and other provincial partners. Delegates returned to their regions better equipped to succeed in their projects, and they expect the FPFCB to follow up by developing a training course for parent members of the school planning committee. Mission accomplished! See you next year!
