COUNC APR - 8 1974 TO: Mayor and Aldermen . DATE: April 4, 1974 FROM: R.A. Freeman, City Clerk RE: Joint Family Division Committee His Worship Mayor J.L. Tonn of the District of Coquitlam has invited this city and the City of Port Moody to participate in the formation of a Joint Family Division Committee under the provisions of the Provincial Court Act. Copies of this correspondence together with a copy of the authorizing section, Section 18 of the Provincial Court Act, is attached. To gain information on this matter we telephoned the Coquitlam Family Division Committee's secretary, Mr. T. Klassen (Coquitlam's Deputy Clerk) and he informed us that Coquitlam's Committee was now composed of the following seven persons: Mrs. Doreen Kenmuir, Chairman Mrs. Helene Dunlop Mr. Art Spechen Mrs. Shirly Nicol Mrs. Mary Kendall Mr. Don Good Jr. Alderman Garrison (Deputy-—Chairman) Mr. Klassen informs me that Probation Officer Barr and Assistant Welfare Officer Bombardieri of the District of Coquitlam usually attend the meetings as resource people. In response to our suggestion Mr. Klassen agreed that representation from Port Coquitlan. could consist of the addition of two members, one Alderman and one other person from the community interested in Family Division matters. If Council agrees with this approach we would suggest that a reply to His Worship Mayor J.L. Tonn be authorized stating that the City of Port Coquitiam is prepared to participate in a Joint Family Division Committee through the appoint- ment of two persons from Port Coquitlam; one to be a member of Council and the other to be an interested citizen from the City. As a footnote we might draw to the Council's attention the fact that although Port Coquitlam has operated for several years now without a Family Division Committee it is really a statutory requirement that one be established and if this is not done on a joint basis with some other municipality a separate Committee should be formed from Port Coquitlam.
