THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM MEMORANDUM TO: B. Kirk, December 16, 1982 City Administrator FROM: F.E. Peters., P. Eng., City Engineer SUBJECT: Signals at Intersection of Westwood and Kingsway - Public Works Committee, December 15th, 1982 RECOMMENDATION: That the District of Coquitlam be officially requested to consider the installation of traffic Signals at the intersection of Westwood and Kingsway for the 1983 Budget and that the City include $25,000 in the Provisional Budget for its share of the traffic siqnals. BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS: This intersection has been the source of delay and conflict for a number of years and signals have been requested in the past. The intersection is particularly hazardous because of poor visibility to the east and narrow approaches. Left turning traffic in both directions tends to take chances because of the long delays normally associated with left turns. This situation has been aggravated this year because of the additional traffic using Kingsway due to the loss of the Red ‘Bridge. We have. had funds for our share of signals at this intersection in several previous budgets but they were not matched by the District and so the work did not get done. We have received two letters recently requesting that signals again be considered. The Committee feels that signals are warranted here even though they are more expensive than a normal signalized intersection. The reason is that they must be interconnected with the railway signals and because certain widening improvements must be made at the intersection itself. A rough estimate of the cost, without. the benefit of design, would be in the order of $50,000. This should be split two ways leaving our share at about $25,000. Funds for this construction have not been included in the Provisienal Budget and would have to be added at this time if Council approves the recommendation. yy, dAe_DQ 6 “F.E. PetefS., P.
