‘People’s. party’ and» freedom of speech Letter To the Editor, This is in response to Frank Howard’s commentary ‘Part of a Horse’ in the Sept. 23 issue of the Terrace Review. I. don’t know about the Liberals or Con- servatives sending Pauline Jewett a bouquet of flowers, but all Canadian voters should send flowers to her. She at least has the courage to say what she feels about an issue regardless of par- ty policy. - It’s nice to see that the Liberals are busy sucking up to the voters again, but so what? We've all head it all before. That goes for most politicians regardless of party. It’s extreme- ly difficult to get an honest answer out of them. They con- tinually babble whatever line of sludge it has decided is party policy. If I wanted to know how the party felt about an issue I’d ask him (or her) what the party position was, not what their feel- ings were on the issue. So when _ Pauline Jewett or Svend Robin- son are willing to voice their per- sonal opinions on an issue I feel they. shold .be commended for having the courage to speak out. O.K. Frank, heré’s a question . for you: You say, ‘Pauline Jewett ‘should be publicly reprimanded for. she is not putting forward 'N.D.P. ‘policy in her advocacy of violence’ Why should she be reprimanded? She never stated that her claim that violence may be necessary.to clear up the nas- ty situation in South Africa was .N.D.P. policy. She was simply Stating an honest, heartfelt, per- sonal opinion, Apparently to be a good member of the N.D.P. you ‘must be a puppet that speaks nothing but party policy. Any deviation will get you targeted as a risk to their rise in popularity. Although I am not in fayor of violence to settle any issue I have spent enough time on the streets in my younger day to know that sometimes the only solution to a problem is to have a better left hook and faster feet than the other dude. After you -have punched in his lights it may then be possible to get him to sit down and talk sensibly. So in the case of South Africa, Pauline Jewett may be right. Letter To the Editor, . Who can take seriously the ar- ticle “SFU profs say second- hand smoke only slightly risky for non-smokers’? published in a local newspaper recently? The beginning of the article sounds serious: “‘two professors in S.F.U.
