Caledonia Volley girls do well on northern road trip The Caledonia high school girls’ senior volleyball team managed to place third at a 10-team tourna- ment at Fort St. James on the Oct. 19 weekend. The Kermode boys had the weekend off. The girls placed second in their five-team pool by losing 2-1 to Duchess Park in the opener, then scoring 2-0 wins over MacKenzie, Chetwynd and the host team. This gave them a semi-final berth, _ where they lost 2-1 to Nechako Valley to earn their final standing of third overall. Meanwhile, in Grade 8 volleyball action at Prince Rupert, Skeena’s Skeena’s Grade 8 girls beat Kiti- boys posted 2-1 wins over PRSS mat 2-1 and downed Booth 2-0. The boys split into two pools for round-robin. On the four-team ‘A’ side, Thornhill finished first at 3- 0, followed by Skeena at 2-1, then Thornhill ‘B’ (1-2) and Burns Lake (0-3), In the five-team ‘B’ pool, Hazel- ton topped out with 3-0, Next was Smithers (2-1), Kitimat (2-2), Lachklans (1-2) and Houston (0- 3). In the semi-finals, Thornhill ‘knocked off Smithers in two straight games while Hazelton eliminated Skeena 2-1. The cham- pionship match went to Thornhill 15-5, 15-9 over Hazelton. The girls had 11 teams — enough for three pools. Final standings for ‘A’ had Skeena ‘A’ placing first, followed by Kitimat ‘A’, Burns Lake and Thornhill ‘B’. In ‘B’ section it was Thornhill ‘A’ on top, then Kitimat “B’, Skeena “B’, and Houston. Standings for the three-team ‘C’ © had Hazelton first, Nisga‘a second and Smithers third. In the first semi-final round, Kiti- mat ‘A’ downed Hazelton 15-4, 15-6; Thornhill ‘A’ took out Nisga‘a 15-3, 15-0; and Skeena ‘A’ downed Kitimat ‘B’ 15-4, 15- 10. ‘For the next round-robin, Skeena drew a bye. Thornhill ‘A’ gained the final by beating Kitimat ‘A’ 15-13, 15-11. The championship match went three games with Skeena coming out on top over Thornhill 15-12, 3-15, 15-10, Hazelton was named most sportsmanlike team for the girls.
