The bulbous papler-mache objects are filled with candies and suspended from the ceiling, creating a game in which blindfolded children swing at them with sticks. This Latin American tradition is guaranteed to keep the kids amused at the Association's annual international Potluck Dinner. Every Sunday evening from now until Feb. 14, pinatas are being made in Room 211 at Northwest Community College. A pinata is a Latin American paper mache figure, commonly used at festivals and celebrations aS an amusement for the young people. It is ornately decorated and formed to look like a piece of fruit or a comic character, and is filled with small prizes or candies. by Betty Barton The pinata is hung from the ceiling with a rope, which can be raised or lowered at will. One child is blindfolded, given a long stick and told to hit at the pinata in order to break it and allow the goodies to fall, The other children form a circle around the blindfolded child, out of harm’s way. In celebration of Multicul- tural Week, the Multicultural Association is planning a num- ber of activities for Terrace and area residents, Multicultural Week was pro- claimed in recognition of the diverse cultural heritage of British Columbians.
