The sentor boys bowling team of the “Four-Steps-io-Stardom” program in Terrace recently won a trip to provinclal finals at Langley on March 9. With coach John Syrette, the boys are Carl Levesque, Steven Syrette, Mike Syrette, Bryan Netzel and Darcy Netzel. Kermode boys to Vancouver Terrace Caledonia Kermode ' boys came back from a stinging loss to Kitimat Rebels and gain- - ed revenge with two -straight wins to capture the Northwest zone senior boys double ‘AA’ basketball championship and earn a trip to Vancouver for B.C. finals starting March 16. The three-team, double- knockout series shocked defend- ing champion Prince Rupert Rainmakers as they were elim-. ‘inated in two straight. At Terrace on Feb, 25, Rain- makers fought back from a 15-point third-quarter deficit and lost by only three points . (63-60) to Kermodes. Steve Dewacht proved the dif- ference for Kermodes. He scored twice in the final two minutes to give his team its margin of victory. Dewacht’s final basket was a lay-in after he stole the ball and ran the length of the gym. Harpel Manhas paced Ker- . modes with a 20-point effort. Dave Hogg chipped in with 15 while Dewacht had 13. Russell Mather had 18 to lead Rain- makers. The next afternoon at 1990 Games -. Officials from Chetwynd, “Tumbler Ridge and Hudson’s '. Hope gathered at Chetwynd late last month to sign hosting ‘agreement papers for the 1990 Northern B.C. Winter Games, The tri-city group agreed to | fame the event ‘‘The Peace- Foothills Games’’, Tentative plans call for 28 separate sports and activities, _ The “estimated participation is 2,300 athletes, coaches and of- -ficials from an area encompass- éd by the Queen Charlottes to “the west, Cariboo to the south, the Rockies and Alberta to the © east, dnd southern Yukon to the forth, So . oo Kitimat, where all remaining games were played, the home- town Rebels gave their fans a boost .by. eliminating the Rain- makers 66-57. Rebels’ got a 30-point effort from the zone’s most valuable player — Joe Almeida. . That night saw the Rebels take a firm grip on the zone title as they edged Kermodes 61-58. Almeida with 25 and Manhas with 22 were the game’s high scorers. This meant Rebels needed only a Saturday afternoon win over Kermodes to clinch the zone crown. It also meant that Kermodes had to beat Rebels twice to take the zone. On the afternoon of the 27th at Mount Elizabeth School, Ker- modes were sparked by Dave Hogg’s 27 points as they downed the Rebels 61-41 to set up a sudden-death tie-breaker that night. Almeida was held to 15 points. The deciding contest turned out to be a seven-point win for the comeback Kermodes as they posted a final score of 71-64. Almeida with 30 points and Dewacht with 23 were the game’s stars. The victory for coach Phil Letham and his Kermodes was sweet in view of the fact they had lost out in last year’s zone final at Prince Rupert on what they felt was questionable of- ficiating. Organizers selected two all- star teams. On the first team it was Russell Mather of Rain- makers, Dean De Medeiros of Rebels, and three Kermodes — Steve Dewacht, Harpel Manhas and Dave Hogg, Second team picks were Joe Woods and Mark Stubbert of Rainmakers, Gary Reid and Mike Ridsdale of Rebels, and Dion Orbell of Kermodes. Coaches and fans agreed that - this year’s trio of teams were as closely matched as any in previous years.
