July 8th, 1974 From the Royal Canadian Legion, Port Coquitlam Branch 133, July 3rd, 1974, srequest for q grant advict:, that due to the high increase in property taxes from $2,394.11 in 1973 to $4,859.61 in 1974, the Branch will find it very hard to keep up the welfare for Veterans’ assistance and its budget for Comunity Services for the coming year, and requesting that a grant-in~aid be made to that organiza- tion. Accompanying the letter was a statement showing the net operating profit of the Branch in 1973 was $7,346.72, and that donations to welfare and community services totalled $3,723.82. The Mayor then stated he felt that as he was on the Finance Committee of the Branch, he should not be present when the request is being considered, and at 9:10 p.m. he vacated the Chair to Acting-Mayor Alderman Keryluk and left the Council Chamber. Moved by Alderman Laking: Seconded by Alderman Mabbett: That one of the representatives of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 133, be pe.mitted to speak to the request of that organization for a grant-in-aid. Carried. in speaking to the request, Mr. Fred West, President of the local Branch, referred to a handwritten statement indicating that approximately $5,000.00 had been donated to weifare and community services, and he agreed to leave the information for Council's perusal. Moved by Alderman Thompson: That a grant-jn-aid in the amount of $1,000.00 be given to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 133, Lost for want of a seconder. Moved by Alderman Mabbett: Seconded by Alderman Traboulsy: That the request for a grant to the Royal Canadian Legion, Port Coquitlam Branch 133, as set forth in its letter dated July 3rd, 1974,be referred to the Finance Committee for study and recommendation to Council.
