According to the ad- ministration of School District 88, the cost of additional teachers re- quested by the Terrace and District Teachers Association (TDTA) to eliminate oversized classrooms would cost either $967,500 or $1,107,500 depending upon which options were followed. Superintendent Frank Hamilton wrote the school board saying solv- ing TDTA concerns would mean either 11 ad- ditional elementary teachers, seven addi- . tional secondary teach- ers, one additional library staff member plus other changes amounting to $967,500. The option is 11 ad- ditional elementary teachers, 11 additional secondary teachers, four additional library aides plus other changes amounting to B1,107,500. In Terrace-area schools the TDTA has requested, according to’ administration, two more teachers at Uplands, one more full- time teacher plus a half- time kindergarten teacher at E.T. Kenney, one additional teacher at Copper Mountain and Thornhill Elementary, plus a_ half-time kindergarten teacher at Thornhill Primary. At Caledonia, Hamil- ton wrote, the teachers’ requests would mean one new teacher plus a few students would have to be reassigned. In Terrace, there are approximately [50 organiza- tions, providing a variety of services to the people of this community. The quantity of service these organizations offer is beyond the scope of services that any parks and recreation department could ever deliver. The local parks and recreation department recognizes the value of these community organiza- tions and is prepared to assist with the resources available to the department. The parks and recrea- tion department would like to encourage the involve- ment of community organizations in all stages of planning and development of parks and recreation services. Leadership skills The department places high priority on the development of leadership skills and the provision of leadership training to community organizations. An example of the type of leadership training that the recreation department has been responsible for delivering is: the theory portion of the National Coaching Certification program, and now the skills program. The skills program has several parts to it such as: marketing and fund-raising, time management, financial management and short and long range plan- ning. These one-day courses are designed to provide a volunteer person with the necessary skills to operate a community organization. The parks and recreation department will also provide organizational assistance, advertising, etc., to assist interested per- sons in starting a new club or assist with the promo- tion of an existing club. Other general services the department can offer community organizations are: ideas and resource material on fund-raising, registering as a non-profit society running tournaments, advertising and promo- tion, The parks and recreation department works co- operatively with all community organizations and will assist these organizations in any way possible, If you are looking for assistance of any kind, con- tact the parks and recreation department, they may be able to help.
