YVONNE MOEN THIS WEEK I'd like to take you to Smithers, and to a town called = Gientanna, which was aboul seven miles outside of Smithers. We'll look at the town through the eyes of Matt and Annie Malkow, the first ‘newlyweds in Glentanna. Their story is brought to you ‘courtesy of their daughter, _ Victoria. Matt Malkow came to Canada from the Ukraine in the year 1900. He was 18 years old at that time, Malkow travelled ex. _tensively throughout the norihwest, before he de- cided to settle down and slake a pre-emption at Glentanna, overlooking the Hudson Bay Mountain, Today his farm is know as the Malkow Hill Lookout, He: met his wife, Annie Mackney of Inisfree, on a trip to Alberta, They were ~ mantied in October, 1918. The young ~— couple returned = to © Glentanna, where the townspeople were eager to congralulale the Ste emreascentys Farming through the Depression g THIS PHOTO was taken in the spring of 1922 at Glentanna School, Matt and An- nie Malkow, daughter Victoria and son Edward are on the far laft in the first and second row, first newlyweds in Glentanna, and brought by many gifts, In 1919 the couple had their first child, Edward. Two years late in 1921 daughter Victoria was bom. Annie found it. tough going with two little ones, coping with farm chores, and new buildings going up. With the town of Smithers growing, there was an in- creasing demand for pro- duce, Matt made a living as a farrier. He also fixed ma- chinery, and tack for horses. This took bim away from home often, leaving much of the work at the farm to fall on Annie's shoulders. In 1923 a new neighbour moved in, Scotty Warren. rat jp=aaie * aH . It Lit up the city for weeks. Winds would come and flare it up, making the heat and smoke very intense, The smoke was so bad it stopped the crops from maturing, and the whole valley be- came very concerned, The fire burned for six weeks until the rains and snow came. In the late 1920s the fam- ily bought out their ncigh- bour, Scotty Warren, turn- ing more land into pasture. Then the hungry 30s ar- rived and everything came toa slandstill. Potatoes would sell for $1 per 100lbs, if you were lucky. There was no demand for any farm pro- ducts, By the 1940s Victoria was married and Edward went onto pursue other things. The Scotty farm was sold, but Matt and Annie lived on their farm till the sold it in 1959, Then they moved to Smithers, where they lived untit Matt passed away in 1966 and Annie in 1976, They were the true pioneers of the valley, and were gave generously to anyone who needed help. May God bless them, and the many other pioneers who were known for their generosity. Thank you to my friend Victoria, for sharing the story of her parents.
