“ier: 8 Terrace Review — Wednesday, August 27, 1986 Skeena Selects face stiff competition Soccer tournament in Williams Lake The Skeena Selects womens soccer team won two and lost two games before being knocked out of competion in the Williams Lake Ladies Soccer Association Tournament staged Aug. 16 and 17 in Williams Lake. pe ae Female soccer players from Terrace and Kitimat joined forces to play in an eight-team tournament in Williams Lake. The The team consisted of 13. players from both Terrace and Kitimat. This group of talented soccer players was not enough to conquer the skilled forces of the southern interior teams, The Selects were for- tunate to be provided with a 12-seater van from Eurocan Pulp and : Paper Company which greatly reduced the cost of the trip for par- ticipants. Coach Mario Furtado has a class four drivers licence and transported the group safely on the 10-hour journey south. Roger da Silva, coach for the Terrace con- tingent, headed out Fri- day afternoon with some of the local players who ms could get away early. The Kitimat group met in Terrace about 6 p.m. Friday evening and ar- rived in Williams Lake about 4 a.m. The players got a couple of hours sleep and were up about 7 am. to get ready for the 9 a.m. game. The Skeena Selects lost to Overwaitea 6-0 in an uncontested game which featured the Williams Lake team as the running stars. Over- ss Skeena Selects consisted of Mui Luc, Surjit Bains, Lidia Stella, Liz Wootten and Monica Holobowski from Terrace. The Kitimat contingent consisted of Cherry Ledevehat, Laurel Zuidema, Laura Chernowski, Susan Minaker, Maria Con- tumelias, Stacey Brown, Maureen Barbour and Rita Abreu. Coaches were Roger da Silva and Mario Furtado. Locals win horseshoe tourney Del Bjornson of the host club was top winner on the weekend at the Terrace Horseshoe Pitching Tournament at the Heritage Park pitch. Bjornson won the singles event while Joe Wideman placed second. Don Lubbers of Smith- ers took third place and Joan Ziraldo fourth. In the doubles event the Fred Annett team with Emil Gustafson of Kitimat took first place. Don Lubbers and Laura Schulmeister took the runnerup spot. Third place went to Henry Lubbers of Smithers and Lloyd Osborne of Quesnel. waitea moved the ball with speed, accuracy and skill, proving awesome on the. corner kicks. Before the first half of the game was completed, Overwaitea had racked up six goals, a number of them on corner kicks which were either headed _ or kicked squarely into the net. The second game was played against Mickey Ps from Kamloops. Both teams maintained a com- petitive edge and the first half ended with a 0-0 score, About three quarters of the way through the second half, right-wing forward Maria Contumelias from the Skeena Selects broke across the center line in a sprint for the goal. She received a long inside pass from center mid fielder Maureen Barbour which set the stage for. a break-a-way. Contume- lias dribbled the ball across the 18 yard line and was tripped by an opposing player in mid flight. ; . Mickey Ps received a penalty and Sue Mina- ker, of the Selects, lined up on the penalty shot slot. Minaker clipped the ball with a hard inside right side-shot and the ball whizzed past the goalie on a deadly ac- curate place kick at mid height to the left corner.
