Since Jan. 1 of this year, she has handled 34 com- plaints, both from the citizens of Terrace and problems she herself has identified. From September to December of 1989, she dealt with 64 issues of by: laws. by Betty Barton Sweeting’s four areas of by- law enforcement are: @ Smoking in public places — she says she’s had numerous re- quests from local businesses for the bylaw, so that they can en- force the regulation. @ Noise. © Traffic — Sweeting recently attended a seminar on new tick- eting procedures and will be soon enforcing parking and traf- fic bylaws. @ Nuisance bylaws — unsightly premises; Sweeting spends most of her time enforcing this bylaw. She encourages local residents to fix up or demolish broken down fences and collapsed and unsafe sheds, before she is notified of the problem. Now that the snow is going, many unsightly: yards are beginning-to appear, as are unlicensed vehicles out- side the owner’s property. Sweeting says, “‘If it’s city pro- — perty, it’s my responsibility.” - She is stepping up her spring in- spections. First, the problem is iden- tified, the owners are notified by’ letter or phone and given a deadline by which time they must remove or repair the un- sightly premises. If the request is not met, Sweeting sends a memo to Terrace city council notifying them of the problem. The city sends a notice of hearing. If the problem isn’t resolved, the city will clean up the area and charge’ the owner or add the charge to their property taxes at the end of — the year. Sweeting says that in general the residents of Terrace have been very cooperative, and she looks forward to. working with them towards increased safety and cleanliness of the city. prepare _ for science fair - April 22-28 is being declared Science Week in Terrace. To celebrate the week, two major _ activities are planned. “Science World’? from Van- couver will be doing demonstra- tions and displays throughout the week, in the schools and perhaps at some public loca- tions. Terrace Science Fair will fin- ish the week on April 28 in the Caledonia Senior . Secondary School gym. The day will be highlighted with six -science fair. contests; egg drop at 10:15 in the parking lot; paper bridge at 11:15 in the lecture theater; scavenger hunt (a new event) at 12:30 in Room 1; paper airplanes at 1:00 in Rooms | and 2; pop can tower at 1:30 in Room 2’ straw tower at 2:00 in Room 2. In addition to the contests, demonstrations and displays will take place throughout the day, in the Caledonia gym. Entering a project in the Science Fair provides students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 with the opportunity to pursue a personal topic of in- terest in the field of science, in- tegrate skills learned in other subject areas for the develop- “ment of that'topic, and to aim for high achievement and prac- tice self-discipline in the comple- _ tion of the project. Over 40 well-thought-out designs were con- tributed. The Sclence Fair committee voted to select the design will now be incorporated Into promotional materials for the fair.
