June 7th, 1976 has now come for minicipalities to get together through the U.B.°.M. and point out to the Provincial Government that the situation can no longer be tolerated whereby decisions, programmes, etc., are arranged in Victoria and the bills sent to the municipalities for payment. Alderman Laking stated he agreed with the comments made by Alderman Keryluk, and that he did not feel municipal tax- payers should be responsible for payment of welfare programmes. Alderman Thompson stated he felt the situation once again illustrates the problems local governments in dealing with senior governments, and he complimented Mayor Evers on his well-worded letter to the Minister, which sentiment was also expressed by Alderman Mabbett. Acting~Mayor Alderman Traboulay stated his concern at the additional cost for welfare to the City of approximately $44,000.00, and commented that this will result in a cutback in essential services this year. Vander Zalm, Minister of Human Resources, advising that the Municipal Council of The Corporation of the City of Port Coquitlam strongly supports the points made by Mayor M. vers, President of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities, in his letter to the Minister of May 17th, 1976, concerning the decision cf the Provincial Government to increase the monthly per capita charges to muni- cipalities for social welfare, effective April ist, 1976, and that a copy of the City's letter also be sent to Premier Wm.
