Brorup, along with 22 other people from the Northwest, stayed at Bad Kleinkirch- heim, a ski resort in Austria, from Feb. 16 to March 2. _ Brorup commented that while they were at the resort, the Austrian army was holding their skiing competitions which consisted of a biathlon cross country ski race combined with target shooting. Other military events which took place at the mountain were slalom and patrol races with a full field pack. The men taking part in the races were all officers and NCO’s. Brorup was a military officer, and the head of a ski patrol in Europe dur- ing the second world war. He is also a military pilot and photographer. There were approxi- mately 50 competitors ranging from the ages of 22 to 28 years who took part in the military biathlon, said Brorup. “I was surprised at the enormous fitness of the competitors’. The distance of the biathlon is 22 kilometers. After approximately 15 kilometers, the skier ap- proaches the shooting range and receives his ammunition. From the prone posi- tion (flat on the stomach), he fires his five rounds of ammuni- tion against a target 70 meters away. For each miss of the target, the competitor will be penalized by adding a number of seconds to his total time. ‘This re- “ quires a fantastic control that the competitor must have. In my estimation, the military biathlon is the most demanding sport there is,” said Brorup. After firing his am- munition, the competitor picks up his weapon and - - skis toward the finish line. The winning. time was approximately one hour and 20 minutes, said Brorup. oa a GROCERY PICKUP From Safeway 1:30 & 5:00 PM dally plus 8:30 PM Thurs & Fri. onry®4o° FREE TO SENIORS... only through Chimo & Safeway.
