B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 3, 1995 Pansies and lilacs popular first flowers THE FIRST farmer’s market opens this Saturday, and if you're locking for bedding plants, make sure to come down, You might end up hearing some great stories about early Terrace gardens, as well as finding beautiful plants. Last year I bought a plant from a vendor at the market who couldn’t tell me the name of the plant, or explain in English what it would look like. When it grew up and flowered, I recognized it was a type of golden rod that my grandmother had in her flower bed (which was located where the Royal Bank is now). Jn the pioneer years in Terrace \ there-were not a lot of big flower gardens. People probably didn’t have the time or the money to in- vest in flowers. The popular flowers around town were hollyhocks, nasturtiums, bachelors buttons, and pansies, And we still see the remains of lilac trees that were very popular, _ Mrs, Jessie Dover grew lovely asters near (he corner of Kalum and Lakelse.’ Mr. E.T. Kenney lived at the comer of Emerson and Lakelse and had a grapevine. He also had a rosebush called the American Beauty. Mrs, Desjardin. grew peonies and sold them at the railway sta- tion, She also sold strawberries and raspberries to passengers while they waited. ' Mrs. Glass, who lived across from the bowling alley, and Mrs. Chapman, who used to live where the Slumber Lodge is now, both had nice flower beds. And out on Kalum Lake Road, Ms. Pobile grew candy tuffs, eve- ning, scénted Stock. and a jot of poppies. - . hh the 1940s, Mrs. Cland King AT THE MARKET ‘~~ LYNNE CHRISTIANSEN became the first florist in Terrace. She and her husband grew over two acres of bulbs on north Eby, near the chicken farm. Their fields bloomed with daffodils, tulips, narcissus and peonies, Mrs. King had a friend in Prince Rupert who was a dorist, and showed her how to make ar- tangements for weddings, funer- als and many other occasions. Her business ‘‘blossomed’’ and she sold to hotels, restaurants and private citizens. In 1953 Mis. King retired from the florist business and sold all ‘the bulbs to the Mantels, the fam- ily which became Terrace’s sec- ond fiorist. The concert willl feature a variety of folk and classical music, The choir then heads off to Calgary for Musicfest Canada, where they perform May 19, The group is regarded as one of Terrace’s hidden treasures, They won the B.C. Provincial Festival in their class, placed second the year be- fore, and are invited tothe provincial finals again this year. The North- west Singers have also received constant invitations to MusicFest Ca1- ada for the past decade, More people have probably heard the singers perform outside of Ter- race, than in the area. The choir also attended the B.C, Festival of the Arts in Vancouver in 1991, and sung with the Prince George Symphony and the Vancouver Bach Choir in 1993, So make sure you don’t miss your last opportunity to hear them in concert this season. Seating is limited at this event, so get your tickels early at Erwin’s Jewellers, Street-proof your kids IF YOU’RE A PARENT, you’ve probably taught your kids to look twice before they cross a street, and not to talk to strangers. But what else can you teach them to keep them safe from harm? The Terrace Women's Centre is holding a self-defense workshop for children aged 6-10, Friday, May 12, from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. The workshop teaches assertiveness and self-defense skills. In- structors Derrick and Rita Rothermel have been teaching preventative | training to women and children for over eleven years. Using confidence building skills and Goshin-do they help children develop street smarts, and teach them how to protect themselves. There is na charge for this workshop, and May 12 is a nos- instructional day for students. To register your child, come to the Women's Centre on Park Ave. and sign a consent for participation form. Registration is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis, For more information, call 638-0228. Zz po "Oo I | WONDER WHO THAT IS?
