BC Transit, Victoria, operator, Ernie
Norman, is the winner of the 40-foot bus
category in this year’s American Public
Transit Association Roadeo. Erie scored
an amazing 644 out of 650 points on the
written exam and outperformed all of his
competitors on the difficult obstacle
course to edge out 116 other competitors
from across North America.

Erme has been driving transit coaches
since 1972 in Vancouver, Mississauga and
Victoria. He is well known in this competi-
tion, having recorded victories in 1983, 1985
and again this year. His drive through the
obstacle course was “as close to perfection as
I've ever seen,” said Bod Lingwood, BC
‘Transit’s general manager, Victoria.

Contestants must first win at home to be
eligible for the APTA Roadeo, Ernie won
the Victoria Roadeo held in May.

On October 16, a lunch was held for
nplovees of the Burnaby Overhaul facility
to thank them for their exceptional efforts in

past months. The recent arrival of all our
new buses meant hundreds of hours of pre-
delivery work for Overhaul employees, but it
also required many unexpected hours spent
installing sun visors and correcting power
steering, oll pressure and other problems
that required immediate attention. They did
all of this and still] managed to perform all
the scheduled major overhauls.

The enormous number of September
sheet changes meant hundreds of new bus
stops had to be made and installed by
Facilities crews, Hundreds of other stops had
to be moved or alrered with new ID signs
manufactured and installed by Facilides staff.

“This lunch was to thank all of the people
who've had to turn cartwheels in the past
few months to meet service requiremenis for
September and October — which includes
almost everyone at the Burmmaby Overhaul
facility,” said Brian Hollingshead, manager

equipment and engineering. “These people
didn’t just gec the job done; they did it and
maintained the exceptionally high standards
people have come to expect from them,”

The lunch was hosted by general manager
and chief operaung officer, Greater Vancouver,
Heinz Schweinberw, and all of the management
of the Equipment and Engineering Division.
