An artist greatly concemed with social issues, i Fernando uses portraiture and sgraffito toexamine sub- jects such as corruption, corporate power and hypocrisy. Using ancient techniques, he pushs the boundaries of modern art. March Diversity in Clay March 7-April 1 Opening: March 7, 6:00-8:00PM The Gallery mounts an exhibition fearur- ing works by presenters at the Canadian Clay Symposium. Works by Clary Illian, Susan Lepoidevin, Peter Isley and others. April Jill Waterfall April 4-Apeil 30 Opening: April 4, 6:00-8:00PM Jill Waterfall has worked with clay for 30 years. Recent work consists of wheel thrown pieces and small pinch pots, low fired in saggars within a gas kiln. The dramatic surface effects, from subtle greys, pinks and corals to vibrant reds, oranges, browns and blacks, are denved from mate- nals packed around the pots. Jill's designs suggest rock strata, pebbles on a surf swept beach, growing things and tangled roots. 4 Gallery of BC Ceramics Exhibitions 2002 May Sik Road May 2-June 3 Opening: May 2, 6-00-8:00PM To celebrate Asian Heritage Month, the Gallery hosts a show juned by Kinichi Shigeno. The exhibition features pieces by members of the Potters Guild of BC who use traditional Asian techniques, as well as those whose work has been influ- enced by the ceramic traditions of Asia. June Place Setting June 6—-July | Opening: June 6, 6:00-8:00PM Combining works by members of the Pat- ters Guild of BC and the British Columbia Wood Co-op, this show features a selec- tion of ceramic place settings and wooden furniture. The exhibition is juried and re- veals many different interpretations of the traditional place setting, the dinner plate, side plate and soup bowl. July Askoi Laurie Rolland July 4-30 Opening: July 4, 6:00-8:00PM To many cultures the bird is the symbol of the human soul, the winged figure linking the earthly and heavenly realms, An ex- ploration of this idea unifies her exhibit. Fascinated by the promise of spiritual as- cent symbolized by the bird, Laurie uses this image frequently. August Don Hutchinson August 1-Septernber 2 Opening: August 1, 6:00-8:00PM Don Hutchinson is one of British Colum- bia’s most admired potters. Don is well known for his unique work as well as his interest in wd study of the use of BC rocks and minerals in stoneware and porcelain glazes. As the long-time head of the Ce- ramics Department at Langara College, Don's work is multi-faceted and reflects his love of ceramics and history. Potters Guild of British Columbia Newsletter September Terra Incognito Pia Sillem and Jinny Whitehead September 5-October 1 Opening: September 5, 6:00-8:00PM Inspired by nature, Jinny Whitehead and Pia Sillem's organic forms lend them- seives well to the ancient technique of sawdust firing, where smouldering saw- dust leaves smoke marks on the buffed surface of the clay. This exhibition fea- tures works that echo the elemental beauty of nature, both in the firing technique and forms and shapes they reference. October Neil McBriar October 3-November 4 Opening: October 3, 6-00-8:00PM Using simple quiet glares to accentuate hard edged forms, Neil McBriar synthe- sizes the aesthetics of computer generated hip hop and jazz with the issues being faced in contemporary art, design and ar- chitecture. “I enjoy the boundaries set by function so my work is born from a pas- sion to construct and create objects for daily use and contemplation.” November Message in a Bottle Suzy Birstein November 7 —26 Opening: November 7, 6:00-8:00PM The work in Suzy Birstein’s show consists of bottles and large wall-mounted and free-standing pieces inspired by the gods, goddesses and icons of ancient and con- temporary cultures. Inteprating messages in these sculptures, many of the titles of her pieces use poetry or music lyrics re- lated to the shapes and images found in each piece.
