THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQU:ITLAM MEMORANDUM TO Ge Voncina, June 21, 1988 Operations Manager FROM: S. Brown, Asst. Operations Manager SUBJECT: Request to Purchase a Dial-a-Grade Laser In the past month the City has been renting a dial-a-grade laser for our Harbour Street Sanitary sewer capital work project. On this project there has been a definite advantage in using this laser because oF its quick and easy set-up and ease of use. This type of laser fs very adaptable to our capital works projects as wel] as new services where the grade requirements are critical. The benefits to using a laser are as follows: 1. When the initial Survey layout is done for a project, less field ltayout ts required, providing a saving in layout costs. Batter boards can take up too much room and be very awkward to work around where a laser can be in one location, away from the work or even in a manhole buried with traffic running over it, making it very easy to work witir. Setting up the new lasers can be done very quickly and checked easily by a Surveyor. A surveyor should check line and grade on a laser at least once a day after the initial set up TO ensure the laser Was set correctly and has not moved. The laser gives the Surveyors freedom to do other work (after the laser js running). With a laser it takes one man to check grades, whether it be the excavation or the grade for laying a pipe. The grademan never requires someone else to give him a hand, as required with other grading methods, making work go quicker and with more ease. | understand these types of lasers can be used on road and curb grades where the Slopes are constant.
