The Committee was given'a number of ideas to investigate. The Chairman, Alderman Mabbett and Members, Alderman Thompson and Alderman Traboulay, met as a Committee on four separate occasions during the month of October and November and at these meetings pursued the Committee's terms of reference with a number of local contractors, a trailer park operator, and a local mobile home manufacturer. This report will serve as an interin report from the Committee as ‘the Committee has been pursuing a number of worthwhile ideas. However, they require further investigation before a definite plan of action can be recommended. One of the initial recommendations of the Committee will therefore be that a Housing Committee be appointed for 1975 to follow up on the work of the present Committee and bring these ideas to a conclusion. Scope of Report The Committee was asked to investigate such things as the quality of building, type of building, senior citizens housing, subsidized housing, etc. The Committee has concluded that the particular area of housing that the City could become in- volved in is the smaller type of house which could possibly be offered for sale at something less than the $50,000. and $60,000. homes that are presently available in the City. At one end of the scale the Provincial Government is actively engaged in providing subsidized housing and there is no problem save that of mortgage or market: conditions in encouraging the private sector to construct conventional ‘housing. The Committee therefore confined its investigations to the various alterna- tives available in utilizing existing City owned land in an attempt to provide cheaper housing. Alternatives Investigated The Committee reviewed the following aspects of housing: ‘1. Mobile Homes - The Committee has investigated the possibility of establishing a mobile home park and just for discussion purposes the City owned property at Wilson and Reeve Street was selected as a possible site. Servicing costs were determined based on a proposed layout. It would appear that the City could develop and service this site to produce an operation that would be self supporting. The Committee's discussions with a trailer park operator indicate that there is @ great demand for mobile home spaces and there would be no problem in finding tenants. ete /2
